As if I didn’t already boast a world-class inclination to procrastinate, the merry pranksters at Nakedsword.com (which carries this column) are now presenting Rod Barry Week. Aw, damn. Now I’m not getting any work done at all this week. Among the titles being presented are CURRENT AFFAIRS with a lean, scorching Jeremy Penn on the cover, and MERCURY RISING starring an innocently gorgeous Travis Wade, all muscles and apple cheeks. Oh, right, and the “Adult Video News” GAYVN nominations were announced this week.

It was a busy week in GayPornLand, so much so that lots of sizzling scoop is being pushed to next week (that new gay porn scandal hitting the military, agent David Forest’s pandering trial), including news about BONESAW from Adonis Pictures—a gay porn spin on the horror film “Saw”—and BI-BACK MOUNTAIN from All Worlds Video. In this week’s column, one of our own hits it big (twice!) at the Sundance Film Festival and we bid a sad farewell to performer/director Johnny Rey.

Quinceanera, written and directed by Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer, won both the audience award and the grand jury prize at the recently concluded Sundance Film Festival. Quinceanera is described by “Daily Variety” as a ” ‘neo-sink drama’ about young people caught in the warp of Latino tradition and gay gentrification in Los Angeles’ Echo Park.” As yet, the independently financed film does not have a distribution deal, although with the double wins that is expected to change.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — “The Adams Report by J.C. Adams” confirmed today that performer/director Johnny Rey has died. He was 42 years old. According to performer and director Dino Phillips, who visited with him several weeks before his death, Johnny Rey passed away January 18th from testicular cancer and other related ailments. When he died he was living with his family in Pomona, California.

More information is forthcoming.

Johnny Rey starred in and directed dozens of gay adult films during the 1990s. He is most famous for ROMEO AND JULIAN: A LOVE STORY (Forum Studios, 1994: d. Sam Abdul), an ambitious, flawed musical for which he won GAYVN Awards for Best Actor and Best Sex Scene.

[Update: New column posted below this entry.]

I Get Questions

Q: Who are you again?
JCA: “J.C. Adams.” I am a gay porn writer, reviewer, columnist, publicist, production manager and director.

Q: Isn’t this site supposed to be a blog?
JCA: Kinda, sorta. Right now it’s an archive for my weekly news/gossip column, “The Adams Report.”

Q: Your name is familiar. Where do I know you from?
JCA: I’ve been published in Adult Video News, New York’s HX, Genre and many other mags. I used to edit Unzipped Monthly and Inside Porn Magazine. Various websites run my column. And I am a regular guest on The Derek and Romaine Show on Sirius OutQ Satellite Radio, channel 149.

Go pick up the February 2005 edition of “Interview” magazine (Bryce Dallas Howard and a couple of way hot male model/actors on the cover). The issue is themed “35 Reasons to Have Heart” and reasons #28 to #35 are eight Bel Ami models. Eh, what?! Hell, I don’t disagree. But, wow, a bunch of queer porn stars appearing in a major photo spread of a mainstream pop culture magazine as reasons to buck up and be cheerful about the state of things… now that is what I call transgressive in this era of faux-Puritanism and politically sanctioned gay bashing.

AWARDS FEVER
The gay adult kudos season kicked off with the “Cybersocket” Awards in Las Vegas on Thursday, January 6th. Among the 700 winners were the following adult-oriented awardees: Best Art & Artist Site went to the Tom of Finland Foundation; Best Erotic E-Zine went to Cockring.org; JasonCurious.com picked up two Best Live Webcast Personality awards (one fan-chosen and the other an industry award); and Chichilarue.com was another double-winner for Best Specialty Adult Pay Site, while her LiveandRaw1on1.com won Best Voyeur Site.

Greetings, once again, dear listeners of the Derek and Romaine Show on Sirius OutQ Satellite Radio. You may have again heard my dulcet tones this week (Wednesday, 01/12) ruminating about all things pornographic and chuckling ruefully when Sir Derek upbraided me for not updating this website more frequently. Er, yeah, I’m working on that…

Antway, this bare-bones website is designed merely to archive my “Adams Report” columns; I’m not tech-oriented so your patient indulgence is appreciated. Stay tuned as more columns are added. But, right now, we’ve got the most recent here for your delectation. If you simply can’t wait to read the freshest column available, follow one of the links to your right. I’ll be back on Derek and Romaine on Wednesday, February 9th.

It is my sad duty to confirm the death of a well-known member of the gay adult entertainment community. Director Tony Alizzi of MSR Videos died of an apparent heart attack on Sunday or Monday, January 2nd or 3rd. The coroner’s report is pending. Tony Alizzi was 42 years old.

Tony Alizzi founded MSR Videos in 1999 after leaving an acclaimed career as a set decorator for television. He earned five Emmy nominations (two Primetime nods, three Daytime) for his work, and continued to lend his set design and decorating expertise to fundraising efforts for such organizations as Broadway Cares and Divas! Simply Singing.

Right now GayPornLand is dead, dead, deader-than-dead. While the rest of Hollywood launches into 2005, hungover and grumpy, the center of the porn universe will transfer to Las Vegas for the next week (January 4 - 9, roughly). The Adult Entertainment Expo, the “Cybersocket” Awards, the “Adult Video News” (hetero) Awards, various parties and convention-hall schmoozing, it’s all there. The adult entertainment world gets back to business mid-January.

As it is dead, dead, deader-than-dead around these parts, particularly if you write a gossip/news column, we’ll continue our look at the Year in Gay Porn as covered by the “Adams Report.” I do have a couple of quickie items to report, though.
