David Awards Controversy?
October 22, 2007 | Leave a Comment
[UPDATED: 5:37pm PST] The 2nd Annual David Awards were handed out this past weekend in conjunction with the Venus Erotic Expo in Berlin, and it seems we have some trouble brewing over international waters. Presented by Germany’s GAYeLINE Magazine (a trade mag like Adult Video News) the David Awards have antagonized a certain faction of Expo attendees and industryites over the show’s perceived support of bareback studios and films.
I wrote the other day that Chi Chi LaRue and Channel 1 Releasing picked up two trophies–Best U.S. Director and Best U.S. Cover for IN HIS DREAMS. Apparently the Davids presented trophies, I’m told, in 23 categories with three nominees per category. There was no program, per my Constant Reader, who was in attendance. It turns out Bel Ami was nominated in multiple areas and went home empty-handed, while Best Website apparently went to Mans-Art.com, which set off some grumbling (and was a small sign of what was to come).
The Best U.S. Studio award went to Treasure Island Media, a bareback company. "The real event of the evening that briefly disrupted the proceedings," writes our spy, "and raised some attention was Chi Chi LaRue, who, going on stage to receive [the] award…let out her anger at having been tricked into attending an event glorifying [bareback]. The guy who showed up next to pick up Treasure Island Media’s award could only answer, ‘Fuck you!’ "
My spy is also upset (as you can surmise, he is adamantly anti-bareback) over other condomless films that picked up awards, including one (I’m told) that was "released some four or five years ago. This is just to show you the shameless impudence of the whole thing. This [was] really quite an ugly, disheartening moment."
There’s another side to this developing story. Stay tuned for that…
I did learn that Treasure Island Media was nommed for Best U.S. Studio alongside Hot House Video and Titan Media, and that TIM’s Paul Morris was nommed for Best U.S. Director together with Ms. LaRue and Joe Gage (who shoots only for Titan these days).
Over at the TIM blog, upon receiving news of their nominations, they wrote, "I don’t know if this has anything to do with our being the bestselling studio in the world, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that were a factor in our being nominated. I’m particularly honored to be included in the company of the legendary and brilliant Joe Gage, a man who invented much of what serious, intelligent and legitimate adult work is now all about. This is a man who is leagues beyond the rest of us. To be on any list that includes Gage is as much an honor for me as being a contender for the award." Treasure Island also acknowledged co-nominee Chi Chi LaRue as "an outspoken critic of Morris’ work."
UPDATE: I’m told Titan’s Bruce Cam was set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. But when show producers learned that Mr. Cam planned to refuse the award in protest, they allegedly rescinded the honor and barred a Titan rep from appearing onstage. The studio plans to release a formal statement shortly.

Last year we won the Best Film produced by a non-European company but were not there to receive it. This year the organizers told us point-blank that they will need sponsorship in order to give us a nomination and depending on the amount of money we would give they could even guarantee a win. We refused to respond to the e-mail. –Michael Lucas, CEO Lucas Entertainment
who gives a fuck about awards? these people act like they’re making art or something. another excuse for the drama-queens to behave badly.
