Titan-logoThe David Awards controversy we first wrote about yesterday is hitting the boiling point. Titan Media, Channel 1 Releasing‘s Chi Chi LaRue, Michael Lucas of Lucas Entertainment and others have denounced the David Awards for allegedly tying nominations and awards to advertising support, and for honoring studios that produce bareback adult films. Titan’s Bruce Cam had been set for a Lifetime Achievement Award and turned it down. “It would be against every single fiber of my moral being to accept this award,” he announced in a press release today.

The 2nd Annual David Awards were presented Friday, October 19 in Berlin by European trade publication GAYeLINE Magazine in conjunction with the annual Venus Erotic Expo. When Treasure Island Media, a bareback company, won Best U.S. Studio, they instantly antagonized a large portion of attendees. Hot House Video and Titan were the co-nominees. Additionally, TIM’s Paul Morris was nominated for Best U.S. Director alonside Chi Chi LaRue and Titan’s Joe Gage. Other bareback movies were also honored, including, I’m told, a film that is several years old.

“We were truly shocked and appalled by the overwhelming amount of low end and poorly produced bareback films being honored at the awards,” says Keith Webb, Titan Media’s VP, in today’s press release. “When it became known to the producers of the awards show that I was going to refuse the award on Bruce’s behalf [he had been unable to attend due to illness] the award was pulled and I was refused access to the stage. They did not even have the decency to allow me onstage to voice our opinions and to politely refuse to accept the award on Bruce’s behalf. In my opinion the entire event was a set-up meant to showcase and promote bareback films, and was the most biased and poorly produced awards show I have ever attended. The event was an embarrassment to the entire gay adult industry and I am sad to say we were even represented.”

As I’ve mentioned several times in recent weeks, a complete list of David Award nominees has not been circulated and press representatives have not been made available. “It appears that this year’s list of nominees were kept from [us] and other nominated studios in an apparent attempt to conceal the amount of bareback films and studios being nominated,” Titan notes. “Had [we] been informed of the fact that the vast majority of nominees were bareback we would not have supported or attended the event.” Titan’s statement backs up additional off-the-record claims I’ve received that other nominees felt tricked into attending the David Awards show.

Chi Chi LaRue was among those attendance and announced her displeasure from the podium. When a TIM rep accepted their Best U.S. Studio trophy, he is alleged to have lobbed a “fuck you!” to the directrix.

In his press release, Mr. Cam says, “I cannot in good conscience accept a Lifetime Achievement award from an organization that glorifies and promotes bareback content alongside my own. I have worked my entire adult industry career to promote and eroticize safer sex content in all of my films… Silence is acceptance and I can no longer sit by and watch the industry where I have worked and helped shape be destroyed by others seeking financial gain at the expense of performers and the entire gay community. I cannot and will not accept this award as it is tainted with the blood of others.”

Ms. LaRue, a Best U.S. Director honoree for the second year in a row (and I’m guessing she won’t have a three-peat) says, in the Titan press release, “I was really disappointed that the David Awards seem to have taken the focus off good filmmaking and quality movies in many of the categories and turned to honoring and promoting all things bareback.”

Thomas Virsov and Ulrich Jong of XXX-Project Germany are also quoted in the Titan press release. “We received an award [for] Best Actor Europe, which was totally unfair,” they said. “We got the award because we paid to sponsor the show, and other awards were given to companies which paid for adverts in the GAYeLINE magazine. We tried to communicate this while we were at the stage, but they took away our microphone. We gave back our award and didn’t take it. We are more than happy that also Titan refused to accept their award.”

Lucas Entertainment CEO Michael Lucas has also chimed in (check the comments in the previous story for his statement). Mr. Lucas notes his company was unable to accept their Best U.S. Film citation in person one year ago. “This year the organizers told us point-blank that they will need sponsorship in order to give us a nomination, and depending on the amount of money we would give they could even guarantee a win. We refused.”

At press time we have been unable to locate an official representative for GAYeLINE Magazine or the David Awards. Stay tuned.

The advertising-for-awards is one thing. But all this bitching and disruption over barebacking is ridiculous. Protest if you want, but it’s not going anywhere.

I think Chi Chi and Titan and Lucas may have a point.
I came out young at 14- it was 1986. It was a dark time in The Castro District of SF, my hometown. Everyone was getting sick and dying. I have friends. What is ‘ridiculous’ is the sad truth that Anon is probably right. And I’m a little confused as to how we got here. Its sells like crazy so yeah the barebacking fetish is probably here to stay. So I ask us to ask ourselves if its healthy… and are we on a destructive path?

    I don’t want to revisit 1986.
I don’t want another generation of men to just disappear.
Will we regret it later? Only time will tell.

I was a child during the first epidemic of the early 1980’s and I do fear in the next five to 10 years that we will see a resurgence of gay men dying. I admit that I do watch bareback videos and I enjoy them but I would not go out and bareback myself knowing the risks. Does watching bareback movies make people go out and have unprotected sex? I don’t believe so. In this world we have free will and we all make mistakes but we will either learn from them, or simply just keep repeating them. The elephant in the room that no one is talking about is the rampant drug use, specifically Meth, that is devastating our community. One of the biggest reasons people go out and have unsafe sex isn’t solely because they rented an adult movie but because they’ve gotten high on drugs and aren’t thinking clearly. People ask should we be our brother’s keeper and I believe we should, but to what extent if they refuse to listen time and time again? Some may consider me a hypocrite for watching but I do care and I do have compassion and don’t want to see my brethren lost. It is also time the industry took stock of itself and committed one of these GAYVN summits to the issue and decide how they will restore quality and responsibility.

Have you heard that recently 3 young male actors were infected with HIV while shooting a bareback movie in the UK?
London-based Boyz magazine raised the story last week. See http://www.boyz.co.uk/pdfs/pdfs.php and look at page 6

I am very proud of Chi Chi, Michael Lucas, Titan and all the others who stand up for what they believe in and what they believe in is right. As an adult performer, I appreciate that fact that they care about their models and not the money that barebacking may bring. Money will come and go but a life you only get once.
