As our Constant Readers know, erotica legend Ryan Idol is making his Broadway debut in the Roundabout Theatre Company‘s revival of Terrence McNally‘s The Ritz (it began previews September 14). With last night’s official opening, the reviews are in. Word is decidedly mixed and Mr. Idol is mentioned only once in six write-ups.

Ben Brantley in the New York Times gives high marks to star Rosie Perez, but otherwise takes a pass and makes no mention of Mr. Idol:  "For ‘The Ritz’ to come across as more than a sanitized tour of Ye Olde Gay Land, it needs a furious momentum it never achieves here. The show has the basic ingredients for farcical frenzy, including a large cast and a whole lot of doors. Yet the chase sequences feel more dutiful than hysterical. We’re given the wiring of farce but, for the most part, none of the wild electricity."

From the Dept. of WEHT: An update (of sorts) on popular musclebod-power bottom Tom Katt. This compact bundle of pure muscle enjoyed a storied ten-year career (1993-2003) and fans never quite got enough of the guy. He has fewer clunkers in his videography than you might expect given his career arc, and lots of now-classic titles, starting with Falcon Studios’ THE ABDUCTION two-parter (CONFLICT and REDEMPTION) and Catalina Video’s IDOL THOUGHTS straight through a decade later to his final films, COWBOY and LORDS OF THE RING for Big Blue Productions.

We recently asked our Constant Readers to suggest potential picks for next spring’s GAYVN and Grabby Awards (and we’ll be coming back to that soon…) But those nominees won’t be revealed for months yet. We do have an appetizer, however. This month, however, Germany’s GAYeLINE Magazine (a gay porn trade mag) sponsors the 2nd Annual David Awards (named for Michelangelo’s David, natch) in conjunction with the Hustlaball and the 11th Annual Venus Erotic Expo in Berlin. Check out the official website at Venus-Berlin.com.

I’m a couple days late on this (these deadlines for the forthcoming 2008 Adam Gay Video Directory are kicking my ass), but mogul Michael Lucas has apologized for his publicity-stunt-gone-awry this past week, a press release with a watermarked photo claiming Mr. Lucas had been murdered. Well, he’s apologized to those who sincerely believed he was dead. To everyone else? "Lighten up!" was his response.

As I wrote earlier, this week, apparently there are no lengths to which Lucas Entertainment mogul Michael Lucas will not go to promote a new project. Now he’s gone and had himself murdered, the big lug

It’s been nearly a month now since performer Danny Roddick‘s September 13 death, at age 31, in his San Francisco apartment. And the rumors are still flying fast and furious. Although Mr. Roddick’s friends and loved ones deserve to question the circumstances surrounding his passing, it’s my opinion that observers with little or no connection to the involved parties have fanned the flames of paranoia and suspicion merely for the sake of melodrama.

He was found at his apartment, for instance, and not anyone else’s. A toxicology report slowed the official release of Mr. Roddick’s cause of death and some have chosen to discern nefarious motives behind the delay, when in truth it was simply business as usual. And so on.

Luke Bronson, Star, Jake Woodman (October 8); Asoka, Bo Austin, Jessie Bryce, Caleb Carter, the late Cody Foster, Matt Hunter, Axel Marceau, Daniel Reed, Gregg Rockwell (October 9); Marcus Caine, Danny Chance, Roy Fischer, Jeff D. Kota, Jake Mitchell, Danny Pacheco, John Wolfe (October 10); Austin, Gil Cortez, Joey Hart, Bryan Kidd, Kenny Ryan (October 11); Ivan Csezka, Chris Dano, Andy Dill, Colton Ford, Hank Hightower, Jordan Rivers, Rob Romoni, Chad Wolfe (October 12); Zeb Atlas, Chase Carter, RJ Danvers, Lance Gear, Derec Hardman, Brett Hughes, Bryce London, Beto Ribeira, Julian Salieri (October 13); David Bradley, Anthony Shaw, Nico Sideropolus [Nikolas Markov], Jesse Tyler (October 14).

UPDATED: Apparently there are no lengths to which Lucas Entertainment mogul Michael Lucas will not go to promote a new project. Now he’s gone and had himself murdered, the big lug.

"Michael Lucas found dead in Manhattan apartment," read the press release that contained this alleged crime scene photo. ("Tres considerate of the authorities to watermark the image for him," snarks GayPornBlog this morning. Others, however, are not amused.)

Update: Apparently some fell hook, line and sinker for the PR stunt, judging from phone calls and emails today. “The funny thing about this,” said one emailer, “is that I wasn’t particularly shocked! My first reaction was, Well, it was bound to happen…”

[Slight edit 10/03] Lucas Entertainment is currently in production on GIGOLO and as they did with the recent release THE INTERN, they’ve launched a production blog at XXXgigolo.blogspot.com.

Meanwhile, Lucas Entertainment Exclusive Ben Andrews‘ star continues to ascend. Following his high-profile gig modeling for Loehmann’s (with Erik Rhodes), he’s now on the cover of Time Out NY  and is the subject of a profile in the very porn-friendly DNA Magazine out of Australia.

That ain’t all: Lucas’ own Tony DiMarco — four-time GAYVN recipient earlier this year (the only person to do it) — photo’ed Mr. Lucas and New York celebutante Amanda LePore for the U.K.’s  magazine. Here’s the link to the amusing article about how they met.

Channel 1 Releasing and Topco Sales have paired up for Rascal Toys, to be launched this week (October 3) at The Pleasure Chest in West Hollywood. And, yeah, it goes without saying these "toys" are definitely for grown-ups.

Rascal Exclusives Eddie Diaz (who is the subject of a current Playgirl mag spread) and Cole Ryder join Chi Chi LaRue, who will also DJ. Channel 1 staffers gave out an amuse-bouche of sorts for the Rascal Toys line at the recent premiere party for LINK: THE EVOLUTION: plastic disc necklaces imprinted with the Rascal logo that glowed passion red…

Check out the hotties schmoozing with Rosie O’Donnell on the set of . A couple of these hunks are local dancers of the go-go variety, including Adam Killian at far left. His name might not be immediately familiar to gay porn fans, but he’s worked behind the scenes of dozens of blue movies as a cameraman and lighting tech, among other gigs. He does make occasional nonsex cameos, most recently in THE HOLE (find it at JetSetMen.com). Pop into a West Hollywood nightclub and you’re bound to catch him (and also Griffin, second from right).
