[UPDATE: 11/13/07]

Joe-Romero-1Gay Porn Times has confirmed the death of performer-activist-musician Joe Romero. He died October 30 in Manchester, New Hampshire. Mr. Romero’s partner, who notified the industry of his passing, told me he passed of “HIV complications; his body just couldn’t handle everything.” Although quiet in recent years, for a time Joe Romero was one of gay adult’s most colorful, and prolific, personalities. He made dozens of films between 1994-2006 and carved out an alternative career as a musician as well as an outspoken activist for HIV/AIDS organizations and the leather community. He is survived by his partner, father and two sisters. Read on for additional details (we’re working to confirm other pertinent information)…

“I am absolutely devastated. I cannot express the depth of my grief. I knew Joe really well…he starred in MARRIED COPS DO for me and I starred in films with him. I am absolutely obliterated by this news,” said director Blue Blake. “I’m in shock. How sad. We were all buddies,” helmer Gino Colbert told my colleague, Mark Adams.

Apart from his prolific adult video career, Joe Romero toured the U.S. and Europe in support of his two CDs, “Heavy Metal Porno Star” and “Sexpig” which he self-released on his own label, MotoRock Records. He dubbed himself the “Shock Rock Pornstar” and was embraced in particular by the leather community. “His persona as a hellraiser was his public image,” Mr. Romero’s partner wrote in his obituary. “Privately, he volunteered for organizations such as PAWS LA, AIDS Project Los Angeles and The Tom of Finland Foundation. (He) was an uncommon and vibrant spirit. He will be missed.”

Joe-Romero-2Joe Romero appeared in nearly 100 films as a performer, for nearly every major studio and director. Here are some of his better known titles: BIKER PIGS FROM HELL 1-2 (Wildcat Productions, 1999-2000); COCKPIT (Catalina Video, 2001); COURTING LIBIDO (HIS Video Gold, 1995); EROTIKUS (Catalina Video, 1996); DREAM LOVER (Catalina Video, 1995); HOT COPS (Centaur Films, 1996); HOW TO GET A MAN IN BED (Forum Studios, 1995); LEATHER OBSESSION (Forum Studios, 1995); MARRIED COPS DO (Big Blue Productions, 2001); MOTEL SEX (Gino Pictures, 2002); TECHNICAL ECSTASY (Men of Odyssey, 1999). His final film appears to have been LEATHER DADDIES GANG-BANGING BRAD BENTON (U.S. Male) in 2006.

Just an unknown porn fan here. I saw so many Joe Romero movies over the years and I do wonder sometimes what they’re doing now. They’re human just like the rest of us. It’s sad that he’s gone. But his movies live on, he practiced his music and got to travel (which I never have done), and he obviously had people who cared and respected his life enough to take the effort to let his fans and the people who knew him what happened. He had a good life and brought a lot of pleasure to people. That is worth remembering.

This is most shocking to me as well. It’s typical for me to buy or rent any xxx movie with Joe Romero in it. I loved his body, face —-and yes feet. I have an intense foot fetish & Joe starred in a movie a few years back just for us foot fans. The title of the film was “Suck Ten”. The scene he did in the movie was EXPLOSIVE. His feet were so large & sexy & he was really into the scene in the same way he performed in all of his films. I will miss his natural presence on film.

I first met David in Manhchester, N.H. and we instantly became friends but we both went our seperate ways in our early 20’s and I lost contact with him. In 1994 we were living in the same building on 54th Street in New York for over a year until we bumped into each other and spent some more time together before he headed out west to pursue his career. And again we lost contact with each other. Although, I only spent a short time on and off with him during his life he was a wonderful free happy soul. I was shocked to only find him again and learn of his death. If there is a heaven I hope he is in it. You left your mark my friend.

My name is Jennifer. Dave and I were the best of friends! In fact, he is, in all honesty, one of the truest, kindest & best friends anyone could ever ask for, myself included~ even to this day!!! We lived in LA, in the same apartment building, for quite some time. He was quiet about his public life, except his music, and only shared his personal life with a select privileged few, such as myself. We knew each other, ups & downs, only too well. I had the fortune of spending precious time with Dave…going to farmer’s market every weekend together, helping him get ready for a musical performance, him helping me getting ready for my gigs, (we were night & day there & enjoyed laughs over it!), having regular pot luck dinners & celebrations on the porch, grocery shopping, hanging out in each others apartment for a good laugh (or cry), and even going to the doctor’s office together (for company or to hold hands) when needed. He loved his nephews VERY much and spoke of them all the time! He was ALWAYS concerned about their well-being, and wanted to make sure that they would be ok in life, no matter what obstacles they would have to over come, for they were his pride and joy. That’s why I’m writing this. I knew in my heart, he had passed some time ago and for some reason, closure I guess, I just had to look him up now. I noticed a comment from one of his nephews and I pray that they receive this! He held you each in his toughts, prayers and heart at all times! Wanting the best life you could each possibly have!!! I truly believe in angels and that they can only help those on earth if you ask for their help and guidance, for they are not able to interfere without your permission!!! Dave, the REAL Dave, was in life an angel, and I see no reason for him to want to stop that mission especially now. Our last phone call to each other was 7 years ago. Our very last words to each other, happily, the usual…”I Love You Lots!” My best wishes for peace go out to Dave, and I KNOW he would want those who knew and loved him to find that same peace. Most of all, his nephews, his lover and his true friends & family. With Love…

thank you to all the wonderful people out there who rememberd my brother David (Joe Romero). I just read what others wrote and it really touches my heart to know how loved my brother was and still is, I miss him every day and love him so much. He was very sick at the end of his life and we were at his bedside and took him home with us to be cared for at home. He died peacefully Oct 30,2007 with family and friends with him at the hospice house in Merrimack NH. In his memory please help others stricken with HIV/AIDS. I have worked in healthcare since 1980 and have seen alot of suffering and those that are suffering from this disease suffer so please help others out there. God Bless you!

I met Joe when he was David-before the films- he was a sweet guy with an amazing laugh and great singing voice. I am so sad to hear this news. RIP you were a sweet man!

Joe and I worked at a couple of San Francisco nightclubs together in the early-early 90s(The I-Beam and The Kennel Club). We worked behind the bar, and what I remember most about Joe was how humble he was, none of that “I’m too bougie/cool to pick up dirty bottles and glasses” shit……..He held his head up high. And we laughed our asses off together. Joe was such a doll, a real sweetheart!
His passing has come as a total shock and surprise.

I knew David many years ago when he lived in Philadelphia. Such a nice guy. I helped him pack when he moved to San Francisco. I have to say this again, he was such a nice guy.
