Gay Porn Times has confirmed the death of performer-activist-musician Joe Romero. He died October 30 in Manchester, New Hampshire. Mr. Romero’s partner, who notified the industry of his passing, told me he passed of “HIV complications; his body just couldn’t handle everything.” Although quiet in recent years, for a time Joe Romero was one of gay adult’s most colorful, and prolific, personalities. He made dozens of films between 1994-2006 and carved out an alternative career as a musician as well as an outspoken activist for HIV/AIDS organizations and the leather community. The Adult Industry Medical (AIM) Healthcare Foundation is warning the skin biz about an STD outbreak in Eastern Europe. "I just want to make sure that everyone realizes there is a huge outbreak of syphilis," reads a bulletin issued by AIM’s Dr. Sharon Mitchell earlier today. "Right now [the] Czech Republic and Hungary are in quarantine until the end of November…I am telling you right now, that if you are going back and forth to [Europe] you are not safe from this syphilis outbreak." Johnny Hanson Stokes BB Debate

Performer Johnny Hanson has stoked the bareback-vs.-condoms debate with the news that he has filmed a condomless scene, despite publicly declaring his opposition to barebacking earlier this year as "not too smart and way too risky." Why the reverse decision? "I was paid the top dollar I asked for," he told my colleague Vincent Lambert. "And I figured being the top wasn’t too much of a health risk." That last comment has added dark clouds to the David Awards-bareback storm that had only begun to dissipate. In separate open letters to the industry, Lucas Entertainment CEO Michael Lucas and Titan Media VP Keith Webb have condemned Mr. Hanson’s remarks.

Got ‘Em! 2007 David Award Nominees

[UPDATED 11/07/07 with more winners. Plus, the comments section is pretty lively...] I’ve managed to get my hands on a copy of Germany’s GAYeLINE Magazine that contains the full list of the 2007 David Award nominees. (A tip of the hat to my European Constant Readers.) These nominations were not circulated to the U.S. skin biz prior to the awards show, leading some peeved industryites to publicly speculate that producers wanted to "trick" (their word) condoms-only companies into attending. As we already knew, Titan Media earned four nods and Channel 1 Releasing snagged three. But Bel Ami, Hot House Video and Raging Stallion Studios (as well as Treasure Island Media) earned two nominations. Chaos Men, COLT Studio, Kristen Bjorn‘s Sarava Productions and Tipo Sesso each nabbed a single nod. Among European companies, XY Studios led with seven noms followed by Eurocreme with four.
