GAYVN Hosts Criticized; Derek Hartley Hits Back

Earlier this week I broke the news that Sirius satellite radio hosts Derek Hartley and Romaine Patterson, together with dragstress Lady Bunny, would co-host the 10th Annual GAYVN Awards next month in San Francisco. Right away, the biz weighed on their unenviable position of having to follow Kathy Griffin’s raucous emcee job last year. As I wrote yesterday (scroll down), Jason Sechrest video-blogged his doubts. Then NakedSword.com’s new blog, The Sword, weighed in with a particularly scathing assessment (”Lady Bunny, Houseplants to Host 2008 GayVNs“), calling Ms. Patterson a “steroidal puffin” and making light of how she came to public attention as the best friend of the late Matthew Shepard. Of her co-host, The Sword snarked, “(i)f you neutered and lobotomized Paul Lynde, then married him off to Regis Philbin you’d have Derek Hartley.” Click here to read Mr. Hartley’s public response…
This morning on his own blog, Mr. Hartley hit back (”My Life on the F List“), noting that he and Ms. Patterson realize they are not on the level of Kathy Griffin. But over the five-year run of their radio show, they have cultivated a relationship with the gay porn biz (”even Michael Lucas likes us!”) and their close association with COLT Studio led to cameo appearances (and a Best Nonsex Performance GAYVN nod last year for Mr. Hartley) in the Buckshot Productions feature BIG RIG. And as Constant Readers know, they’ve brought me on the show as a guest sexpert for almost five years.
“I knew we would be a disappointment after Griffin,” Mr. Hartley writes, “and as I could tell from my GayVN appearance last year, porn stars are not early adopters of satellite radio, but I wasn’t quite prepared for how rapidly we would be sent down the river.”
He says the Sword blog was “(w)ritten anonymously, and clearly by someone who (like Jason [Sechrest]) had never heard our show. They had done nothing but read our show one sheet and my latest blog entry and pronounced sentence on us.”
Further, “…what [you] said about Matthew Shepard was really below grade. I know you are upset about not getting to host the porn awards (that must be the end of the world), but is it necessary to discount the work someone did on a global scale to combat homophobia? You know, to make the streets safe for a low life piece of shit like you.”
Further, “Our little radio show is not for everyone. Hell, most days, I don’t think it’s even all that worth listening to. But we have been doing it for five years. And even if I don’t always think its great, do you know who did? Time Magazine. They said our show was ’suggestive of radio’s party days, before big radio ate the AM/FM dial… and sucked the fun right out of the control booth.’ Oh and the Washington Post. They said our show was ‘frisky, freewheeling… a distinctly different brand of radio.’ The New York Times even called me ‘handsome’ and my ego has been dining on that for five years now. What have they said about you? And what will we say about you when we get on stage at the GayVN Awards? I guess you will just have to come by on February 16th and find out. If you dare show your face. Tickets are still available!”

People will bitch about anything. I haven’t heard Derek and Romaine that much, but what I’ve heard was funny. LAdy Bunny is hilarious. So get off it already…….

DnR are fucking hilarious! I listen to them all the time. I’ve even called in a couple times. They are perfect to host. Jason Seacrest and the anonymous Sword blogger need to get over themselves.
Well I am a Jason S. fan so of course would love to have seen him on stage, Im not going too down the current hosts though I have NEVER heard of them. As far as Lady Bunny goes its a toss up sometimes I enjoy her and others I shake my head at. This is my first year attending the awards I just wish the host would have been someone I know or can relate too……….
If you watch Jason Sechrest’s video-blog on YouTube, he will see that he really didn’t say anything negative about the new hosts. He was just being sarcastic and joking around. (And singing like Judy Garland…LOL!)
I haven’t read that other Sword blog, but I think it’s terrible if they took personal shots at these people. I just wish you wouldn’t lump Jason — who was just playing around — into the same category as that other blog.
Anyway, I love Kathy Griffin to death. However, I’m sure these new hosts, Derek and Romaine, will do just fine. I wish them the very best!
You know, we have real issues in this industry to get upset about. This is just much ado about nothing!
Jason Sechrest wasn’t as vicious as The Sword, but he is still guilty of making a snap judgment. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have said what he said, just that you can’t let him off the hook because he tried to make a joke out of it. That’s his shtick and why I gave up following him regularly.
And that’s enough of THAT…
I’m not upset about them hosting, I’m upset at paying $2000 for 10 seats when they are hosting! I want some of my money back!
“Let him off the hook” for what, Bill in SF? Are we now not allowed to be satirical or politically incorrect, or to criticize the Gay porn establishment? Give me a fucking break!
And NOW, that’s enough of THAT…
DNR are fucking funny as hell. All you have to do is listen to their interviews with Michael Lucas and Erik Rhodes to see how great they are. Like they say on their show” We are not for everyone, we are for you.” The dickhead that talked about Matthew Shepard showed that they were a class act.
Derek and Romaine… damn… I think we’ve just confirmed we are in a recession… the budget for the GayVNs must have been like $7 this year.
I listen to the Derek and Romaine Show, and while it has its funny moments, I just don’t think that they’re a good choice to host the show. Derek Hartley was not a welcome addition to the Colt film he was in, and Romaine, well, she just ain’t funny. And for what it’s worth, Jason Sechrest would have been a terrible choice, too. After having a celebrity host the GAYVN’s, the show can’t revert back to having “celebs” of the gay porn community (which includes Lady Roma, Jason Sechrest and Derek Romaine) host the proceedings. Talk about a step backward!

As we all know, awards shows are boring no matter who’s hosting them! I love Derek and Romaine and think they are welcome addition - they are strong supporters of the industry and truthfully, I’m very surprised to see that someone above complains about paying 2000 dollars for a table just because of the hosts! Well, stand by your word and cancel your table then - whaa whaa whaa!
I for one will be attending and enjoying Derek and Romaine and will be supporting them with a big smile and gratitude - Now, go have a life and complain about something else.
