Okay, okay, so gay porn awards trivia isn’t exactly cocktail party chatter. But I pay attention to this stuff and all that info crammed into my poor, overstuffed brain pan has to go somewhere. And we need a break from all the doom-and-gloom these days. So here ya go: Twelve films from 10 companies are up for GAYVN’s Best Picture this year. Among them, five companies are vying for their first-ever win: Hot House Video (COMMUNION), Lucas Kazan Productions (THE MEN I WANTED) and Pitbull Productions (TIGER’S EIFFEL TOWER). Click here for more gay porn awards trivia…
Two of the five have two shots apiece at claiming their first top trophy: Raging Stallion Studios (GRUNTS: THE NEW RECRUITS and MIRAGE) and Titan Media (GUNNERY SGT. MCCOOL and H2O).
(News of the weird: Nickolay Petrov, recently arrested and jailed for having harassed and attacked a sixtysomething Florida couple for not repaying a debt, appears in two best-picture nominees: COMMUNION and Jet Set’s JUST ADD WATER).
The remaining five studios with a best-picture contender have won at least once since Adult Video News (now GAYVN for their queer awards) began handing out tropies in 1985.
Jet Set Productions triumphed in 2003 with THE HOLE, their first and only win, and has another shot this year with the aforementioned JUST ADD WATER.
Kristen Bjorn‘s Sarava Productions claimed their only top prize in 1998 for MANWATCHER and they’re in contention this year with ROCKS & HARD PLACES 1-2.
Lucas Entertainment’s nominee is GIGOLO. A win would make it a threepeat for the New York-based company, following 2007′s MICHAEL LUCAS’ LA DOLCE VITA 1-2 and 2006′s DANGEROUS LIAISONS (a tie). A win this year would make Lucas Entertainment only the second company in GAYVN history to win three years running (see: Falcon Studios).
All Worlds Video (now under the Channel 1 Releasing umbrella) has four previous wins, putting them second behind all studios. A fifth win would tie Falcon Studios’ record and would rep a bit of synchronicity as their nominee this year is LINK V: THE EVOLUTION. Their four previous wins came in 2001 for THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS: GLUTTONY, 1996 for FLESH & BLOOD, 1992 for KISS-OFF and 1990 for MORE OF A MAN.
Finally there’s Falcon Studios, a nominee this year for ENDLESS CRUSH. They’ve already got five best-picture wins and a sixth would further solidify their lead. Their most recent win came in 2002 for DEEP SOUTH: THE BIG AND THE EASY 1-2 and their first was in 1988 for TOUCH ME. They’re also the only company to claim three back-to-back-to-back wins (unless Lucas Entertainment ties ‘em this year) with a legendary 1993-1994-1995 triumph for ABDUCTION 2-3, FLASHPOINT and THE RENEGADE.
Some other trivia: The first GAYVN Best Picture honoree was director Matt Sterling and Huge Video’s classic INCH BY INCH in 1985, which also picked up 1984′s Best Picture from the Gay Producers Association. That short-lived group gave out awards for just two years in the early 1980′s. Their inaugural awards ceremony in 1983 honored PLEASURE BEACH (HIS Video), which also snagged best director (Arthur J. Bressan Jr.), cinematography and actor (the wonderful Johnny Dawes). That makes PLEASURE BEACH the first-ever gay porn flick to win a best-picture trophy.
