Michael Lucas Challenges GAYVN Wins

Following the announcement of the 10th Annual GAYVN Awards this past weekend, Lucas Entertainment CEO Michael Lucas is questioning how some of the trophy winners were decided. In an open letter circulated to the industry and posted at LucasBlog.com, Mr. Lucas says that although he is happy with his four wins, he is displeased that all of them were for THE INTERN. “I agree [it] is a great comedy, but it could not be compared or put anywhere close to the same level of GIGOLO.” Further, he termed some wins “absolutely ridiculous,” such as snagging Best-Renting Title of 2007 for THE INTERN. “I am my own distributor, and I know we sold twice as many of GIGOLO…(m)y accounting is available for that.” Click here for more scoop…
A bit of background: Lucas Entertainment had 25 nominations overall; one for MICHAEL LUCAS’ AUDITIONS, VOL. 18, and 12 apiece for GIGOLO (including Best Picture) and THE INTERN, which, as noted, snagged all four of their wins: Best Nonsex Performance (Joe Shepard), Best Supporting Actor (Christian Cruz, a tied win), Best Sex Comedy and the aforementioned Best Renting Title of 2007. Last year, MICHAEL LUCAS’ LA DOLCE VITA 1-2 snagged a record-setting fourteen GAYVN Awards, the most ever in a single year.
He mentions “oustanding” reviews for GIGOLO, whose packaging he describes as “absolutely stunning and incomparable to any other cover. It was created and shot by Tony DiMarco, who has been in photography for 13 years.” Further, Mr. Lucas notes, the “art direction by Tony was outstanding. Take a look at the cover once again…only a blind person wouldn’t see what I’m talking about. The videography by Tony and Mr. Pam could only be compared to mainstream production. So could the screenplay, also written by Tony.”
About his own work, Mr. Lucas notes that a year ago “I won the award for Best Actor …where I did nothing but walk around New York City with a sad look on my face. In GIGOLO, I had a very complex part, which, according to many reviews, was the best performance in porn. And how come none of the other actors were acknowledged? Ray Star was brilliant.”
He goes on to express concern over gossip that screeners did not reach all of the GAYVN judges in time, and disavows any perceived sour grapes. “I am fine for not ever being recognized as the Performer of the Year. I am fine having never [been] admitted into the Hall of Fame after all these glorious reviews about challenging the industry to create bigger blockbusters and raising the industry bar…. If Tiger Tyson is more deserving…then I respect [the decision].”
(One of the qualifications for GAYVN’s Hall of Fame is a decade of work; Mr. Lucas has been in the business for about 12 years, so he could not have been considered until 2006 at the earliest.)
“I do want to be clear: I am not comparing GIGOLO to any other company’s work. I am making a simple comparison [between] this movie and THE INTERN. Even a retard wouldn’t make the mistake that GIGOLO is on a totally different planet. It’s like comparing champagne to Coca-Cola, like comparing a diamond to a rock. GIGOLO is a serious feature that sold in comparably higher numbers and had higher production values, a serious storyline, and impeccable art direction, screenplay and packaging. I have many questions and I need the answers.”

Mr. Lucas certainly has his sensitivity to the mentally-challenged held well in check. In any event, his evaluation of his performance in La Dolce Vita is on the nose.
Enough with this guy already. (I, too, have a problem with the “retard” comment.) He’s free to complain all he likes. But that seems to be all he does, complain. This perpetual victimhood thing is wearing thin. Even when I agree with him (his rebuttal of the Stanford students protesting him last week was spot on), I want to disagree just on principle.

i’m not so keen on michael lucas’s statement either especially as both movies but espeically gigolo weren’t that smahingly good.
intern was better than gigolo which sex scenes were pretty unexciting withnthat boring gay for pay guy tripps, even the scene between lucas and ridge wasn’t that good, and this had more to do with the directing and filming (final scene was impossible to look at dark and dark and dark.
The intern had at least a good scene between ridge and vargas and cristian cruz bottoming as the best slut ever……
u either make film or porn combining both is very tough to do. Both the intern and gigolo had sort of good story lines (read ’sort of’) but the sex has to be spicy, enticing, erotic, fascinating, hot, and well-filmed too.
Moreover i’m blind according to the CEO as the cover of gigolo isn’t hot at all, any caravaggio painting is 1000 times as hot.
Lucas is again right about tiger tyson though….oh, dear ‘hall of fame’? The guy hazrdly made three good movies and they were all in the very beginning of his career.

I tend to like the Lucas movies but it sounds like to me he is pissed off because his movies did not sweep the awards like in years past. Heaven forbid another company should get credit for a movie that had nothing to do with Lucas.

I’m puzzled about something. “The Intern” won Best Renting Title but Lucas is disputing it because “Gigolo” sold more? Well, if “Intern” was rented more times by consumers than “Gigolo” then the award should stand and is therefore accurate. Am I missing something?
Is it possible “Gigolo” was rented less but actually sold more copies? Something is askew.
Do studios actually see royalties from titles rented by the public verses the money they make directly from an actual sale of a title?
It seems possible that more people chose to rent “Intern” than actually buy the DVD for their personal libraries.
Does anyone else see how odd this all is or should we really even care? Haha

Well I preferred ‘Gigolo’ because it had a story, unlike ‘The Intern’ which was about a parade of mincing queens in/out of an office!

I wouldn’t usually defend Michael Lucas’ egotism, but…he’s right this time! GIGOLO was the best film of the Best Picture nominees, technically beautiful, the sex was scorching, script wonderful, acting top-notch. I don’t know how GRUNTS won Best Picture. Maybe Best All-Sex Video, sure, but for a Best Picture win at the AVN’s, I expect a storyline, mainstream-level production value, and acting. GRUNTS had none of these. And Lucas should have won Best Actor, too; Ray Star was indeed quite wonderful in the film, too.
Grunts : maybe best all-sex video.? Come off it; there’s more sex in one chichi scene than in the whole bunch of grunts. Grunts had men to die for but what they did came out of a dispenser: automatic fuck and suck pilot.
Gigolo? Script? Hullo? Scorching sex? Hullo? Even the scene between arpad miklos and that twink (super combination and good-looking pâir) was all but riveting, enticing or sexy…really a missed chance. also the final bang in the movie was ‘all in the dark’…
LOU CASS was robbed of the “Best Non-Sexual Performance” AWARD this year.
