A few days ago we wrote about erotica legend Ryan Idol’s name surfacing in connection to a growing scandal (“Ryan Idol Tied to Birmingham Charity Scandal“) involving the city’s mayor, Larry Langford, and one of his close aides, John Katopodis. The Birmingham press is rather enjoying the gay-porn angle to this story. “It is a scene a pulp novelist’s editor would suggest cutting because readers wouldn’t believe it: A public official is being deposed by a lawyer for a corporation involved in a legal battle with a charity designed to give computers to poor kids. The lawyer asks the official if it would concern him to learn the charity’s money was ‘being used to pay a pornographic star.’ ‘Pay what?’ the public official asks. ‘A pornographic star,’ the lawyer responds. ‘I’d have to learn more about what you’re talking about,’ the public official says. Indeed.” Click here for a few more details…

Why bring up the porn angle “aside from the entertainment value?” the paper asks. “Because Langford is in the middle of setting up a second computer program, also run by a nonprofit, to distribute computers to Birmingham students. Katopodis has organized the mayor’s initiative. Thankfully, the Birmingham City Council on Tuesday voted to delay for two weeks acting on an agreement with the nonprofit newly created by Katopodis…. Put another way, Katopodis has a lot of explaining to do.”

I spent the better part of Thursday morning interviewing agent David Forest at his condo in North Hollywood, together with a reporter from the Birmingham News and a writer from Specialty Publications. As Constant Readers with long memories will recall, Mr. Forest and Mr. Idol have a long and tangled history, one whose threads intertwine regularly, and on occasion, contentiously, with…John Katopodis. Long story short: As long as witnesses can back up that Mr. Idol actually did work on computer systems or performed similar duties, then (as he told me the other day through an intermediary) he truly does have nothing to worry about.

I’m sure Ryan Idol was only putting his hardware into their software.
