“Idol” Contestant’s Stripper Past Not a Problem

The gay blogosphere has been tittering for the past few week or so (annoying, yes, but we girls do like to talk) over the news that current American Idol contestant David Hernandez was, until recently, a stripper at a gay bar called Dick’s Cabaret in Phoenix, Arizona. His former boss spilled a few more beans yesterday, including the news that Mr. Hernandez performed fully nude and gave lap dances to male (and female) patrons. The grapevine wondered if this would jeopardize his position in the competition. Today, Idol executive producer Ken Warwick told TVGuide.com that it was not an issue. Here’s a pertinent quote for our Constant Readers: “The truth is, we’re never judgmental about what people do to earn a living. They’ve got to put food in people’s mouths. [...] There are a lot of people I know who’d love to have the opportunity just to make a better living by taking their clothes off.” For one thing, I’m not sure Frenchie Davis will be pleased to hear Idol feels this way. Secondly, ex-stripper Diablo Cody just won an Oscar, so it will be interesting to find out if a male stripper can be embraced by the public. But porn actors with golden pipes shouldn’t start their vocal exercises just yet. Idol‘s magnanimous attitude stops at hardcore erotica: “If it were some sort of heavy porn, then maybe we’d have to take action. But certainly not on this.” [Image √Ǭ© AmericanIdol.com.]

So they ARE judgemental about what people do to earn a living, if they’re leaving porn stars out.

If you believe the notion that you are “gay by association, then David Hernandez might have “some splaining to do” considering that one of his friends who is featured prominently in photos with him is Ryan Steele, one of Boycrush.com’s most prolific twink performers.

It is clear they are good friends and while I do not watch American Idol I do think most people would assume that if you have gay porn star friends and you work in a gay bar as a stripper that you too are gay.

I can only agree with Mark – if they say they are “never judgmental about what people do to earn a living”, but say on the other side that “if it were some sort of heavy porn, then maybe we√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢d have to take action”, then say are JUDGEMENTAL. Seems that they should think over their own statements…and their policy!!!
@Anonymous: On rereading these posts, I find I must take issue with your “gay by association” thesis. Though David’s friend appears on the site (I haven’t been there to see what he actually does). why do we then assume that HE is gay? Surely you must know that a very high percentage of the performers on these websites claim to be, and a good number surely are, straight.

@Anonymous: I was referring more to “if you have gay porn star friends,” which I thought you meant to identify the friend as gay, but maybe with hyphens it wouldn’t.
Well, the “American Public” put him through to the top 12 even after all the scandal (well, the scandal for one or two days). It will come up again if he advances closer to the finals. So far, so good. He will become “straight” any day now. He and Ryan Seacrest will be very happy together.
