Kyros vs. Thomas: Battle of the Emo Twinks!

[Edits 7:15pm.] My colleagues over at FriskyNews take (friendly) issue with my recent characterization of Kyros “The Candy Spookie” Christian as “the first emo twink” (click here). As if the Triplet Wars weren’t bad enough…now we have The Great and Terrible Battle of the Emo Twinks (okay, so maybe I’m exaggering a touch on this slow news day). “The first emo twink model we became familiar [with] is Czech model Thomas Dyk, the prolific, versatile twink star for Eurocreme, AYOR Studios and many others,” FriskyNews writes. “In 2006′s TALES 2 from AYOR, the very emo looking Dyk explains his love of music and DJ’ing to the camera.” He does kind of look the part, right? “DNA” Reaches #100 (Gives Michael Lucas Away)

Australia’s porn-friendly (very friendly…) DNA magazine is celebrating issue no. 100, on stands now. Look for a pair of crazy hot male models bulging out of tiny red Speedos on the cover. In fact, lifeguards and bathing suits and sundry are major features of the issue; plus, Eric Bana. Yep, I am so there. There doesn’t appear, at first glance, to be any gay adult features. However, they are celebrating their milestone by offering a membership to LucasEntertainment.com with a new or reupped subscription. Nice bit of PR, that bit.

U.K. Moves to Criminalize “Extreme” Porn Images

As of May 8, citizens of the United Kingdom may be prohibited from owning images the government considers “too extreme.” Part of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill includes the banning of images of bestiality and necrophilia, as well as acts or depictions of acts which “threaten or appear to threaten a person’s life [and] result or appear to result in serious injury to a person’s anus, breasts or genitals.” According to AVN.com, the law is expected to be approved and was prompted by the 2003 murder of Jane Longhurst, whose killer was found to frequent websites that feature graphically sexual and violent imagery. Reports AVN.com, “This led Longhurst’s mother Liz to campaign for a ban on the possession of sexually violent images.” Click here for more details…

Awards: 2008 EGPA Shortlist

Awards! Awards! Gimme more awards! Wa-aa-ay back in November (click here) we first wrote about the 2nd Annual European Gay Porn Awards. There were literally dozens and dozens of nominees√¢‚Ǩ‚Äù27 Best Actor potentials, 31 movies up for Best Film, 28 nominees for Best Duo and 19 for Best Group Scene. And of course there was the usual category confusion: Best Twink Film and Best Young Stud Film? Best Hunk Film and Best Stud Film? Anyway, those were apparently pre-nominees. The rolls have now been whittled down to manageable levels in 24 categories, in case you missed it. This is the second year the EGPA has handed out kudos; Constant Readers will recall last year’s controversy over their citing bareback films and studios (and, no, I’m not talking about the David Awards, either. That’s the other European-gay-porn-awards-bareback-controversy.) I got in trouble with the presenting body behind the EGPA two years ago when I first wrote about the controversy over the bareback nominees, as well as complaints of favoritism and the like (click here and here and here). I’ve been on their shit list ever since, I guess. Life goes on. They’re counting AVN, QueerClick and XBIZ, among others, as sponsors this year. “Crazy James” Embraces Porn Gigs

We wrote yesterday (click here or scroll down) about 21-year-old “Crazy” James Zinkland, the pink-mohawked Big Brother 9 castmate who was voted out of the show by his castmates, but ended up snagging a $25,000 audience-favorite prize. Given his nascent reality-TV fame, I was curious as to how he would handle his porn work ‚Äî some web wanking and a costarring role in Dirty Boy Video and NakedSword‘s DIRTY TRICKS ‚Äî during press interviews. To his credit, Mr. Zinkland has embraced it. In a video interview with a Los Angeles CBS affiliate (click here) he says he is bisexual and the porn was no big deal. “I had sex with dudes. It doesn’t blow my mind,” he says, and “it shouldn’t blow your mind, you know? I just did it on tape, you know? And I did it in an environment that was conducive where I didn’t have to worry about a lot of things going wrong.” He figured the porn work would inevitably surface after he began appearing on network television three times a week. “Absolutely. I was okay with it, I was comfortable with it, I was very open with it, but I didn’t want to bring it out on the show because…a lot of people are homophobic. Even with the bisexual thing, people were like, ‘Ooh!’ ” His interviewer doesn’t ask if CBS knew about the gay porn (oy, my grandmother could’ve done a better job and RealityBlurred agrees) but does reveal Mr. Zinkland’s nickname was “Big Brother 9.5.” Bah-duh-bum. Titan Suspects Piracy in Target Switch

Earlier today we wrote about a recent incident in Virgina City, Virgina where a woman purchased what she thought was “a discount cartoon DVD” from a local Target mega-mart that turned out to be a disk containing a Titan Media adult film. When she and her husband returned the DVD to the store, they learned it was the third such incident since Christmas. Titan Media VP Keith Webb read our item and immediately responded (click here or scroll down to read the full text of his comment). “We are appalled and outraged that a DVD with our content would end up in the hands of children,” he wrote. “We are convinced that the disk in question did not come from a legitimate Titan Media vendor or replicator. We believe the disk in question may have come from a pirated source.” The company manufactures their films in “two tightly controlled USA factories,” he notes, “neither of which produce cartoon DVDs sold at Target.” I spoke with Keith Webb via email for a bit of clarification. The inked-up, mohawked, quasi-bisexual free spirit√¢‚Ǩ‚Äùwith gay porn on his resume√¢‚Ǩ‚Äùwon $25,000 as “America’s favorite juror” during the season finale Sunday night. He’s also currently appearing (as “Alex”) on the first season of DIRTY TRICKS, the East Village-based online-only gay soap opera co-produced by Dirty Boy Video and NakedSword. It was taped last autumn in New York, prior to his appearance on BB. “Crazy James,” 21, is truly a product of this new age (post-internet? Raging Stallion to Fuel High Octane

Raging Stallion Studios announced this morning they have purchased Euro-studio High Octane. The deal includes ownership of the 50-plus High Octane catalog and “an ongoing production agreement” to produce six new titles a year. Director Herve Bodilis (a/k/a Herve Handsome) will continue in his position as Head of Production, while Patrick Albret, the former company president, will transition to Head of European Operations. Raging Stallion President Chris Ward notes in the press release that he moved to acquire the company “as soon as [he] heard it was available” and notes their style “is a natural fit for Raging Stallion. High Octane is all about quality√¢‚Ǩ‚Äùquality men, quality filmmaking, and quality fucking!” Mr. Ward also cites the acquisition as a key move towards establishing an exclusive European “beachead.” While other studios must purchase films from independent producers, High Octane will now be exclusive to Raging Stallion. “We will be sending our top exclusives to work in Europe,” he notes. “Indeed, European working vacations will become a standard part of our new model contracts. This also gives us the ability to sign some of the top European stars to exclusive contracts.” The purchase of High Octane continues a period of acquisitions and contraction among gay adult companies; in recent years, MSR Videos was absorbed by Titan Media, while All Worlds Video and Catalina Video were purchased and brought under Channel 1 Releasing umbrella. The next High Octane film in the pipeline is MASTERS AND SERVANTS. It will be released under the new deal and streets June 13.

VA Family Buys Batman DVD, Gets Titan Instead

[Edits 2:20 pm.] A James City, Virginia woman received a jolt recently when “a discount cartoon DVD” she’d purchased from a Target for her young son turned out to be a disc containing a Titan Media film. Per a newspaper report, “there was nothing about the packaging or disc to suggest pornography.” The DVD itself was blank, although it had been sealed and packaged normally. The woman says she ” ‘opened it, put it in the player and went into the kitchen. I heard my son scream, and when I went to check on him, instead of Batman the screen had three men on it, one of whom had no pants on.’ ” Before ejecting the DVD, she saw the Titan logo. When the disc was returned, a store manager allegedly revealed “it was the third time since Christmas a disc had been returned for the same reason.” The family suspects the switch occurred at the facility where the DVDs are packaged. No complaints have been filed with the police and Target has apologized for the incident. [Source: Vagazette.com.]

RIP: Jean-Daniel Cadinot (1944-2008)

Jean-Daniel Cadinot, one of gay adult’s legendary director-photographers, has died. GayPornTimes confirmed the news, through an intermediary, with his production company. Mr. Cadinot, 64, passed Wednesday, April 23 from a heart attack. His career in erotica began in 1972 when he first began to shoot nude photographs and over the next six years produced some 17 photo albums that sold several hundred thousand copies. He formed French Art in 1978 with the release of TENDRES ADOLESCENTS. He viewed filmmaking as gay activism: “”The still photo became too limiting. I quickly reached its boundaries and I had a desire for action and movement,” he once said. “I wanted to go further, to tell our collective stories as gay men. Video enabled me to do just that. I have to say that when I’m shooting photos I prefer to work as an artist and make artistic photos because otherwise it’s not long before it gets pornographic and I don’t like that. In that sense there was a progressive evolution towards films in order for me to tell stories about men. In a way it was my first gay activism to illustrate our sexual stories.” Jean-Daniel Cadinot’s films were celebrated for their sensual imagery and plot-driven narratives. He would write, produce and direct some 60 films over three decades; he won Best Director from the GAYVN Awards in 1991 for THE TRAVELING JOURNEYMAN, and Best Director honors (in 1997 and 2001) from the Venus Awards in Berlin. Classic ’80s Beefcake in Chicago

Press Release Roundup: Any classic gay porn fans in the Chicago area out there? The landmark Bijou Theater (1349 North Wells Street, Chicago) has declared May their “Men of the 80s” month. Running May 12-14, classic blue movies featuring erotica legends Rex Chandler, Steve Hammond, Ryan Idol and Jeff Styker will be screened. “Rex, Steve, Ryan and Jeff were the epitome of the 80√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s look. Gone were the average looking, lean, hairy and sometimes scruffy looking men featured in earlier films,” reads the press release. “All four of these men fit a mold that made Catalina the top studio in the business with slightly muscular looks, clean shaven and no body hair, tattoos or piercings. True models more than stars, it was an image of gay manhood that dominated gay porn through the 90s.” I’d argue they were modelesque hunks who became stars, but tomato, tomahto. The series kicks off May 12 with 1990′s Rex Chandler classic VIEW TO A THRILL, to be followed by Mr. Hammond’s BACKSTROKES (1988) on May 13 and a Wednesday, May 14 double-feature of POWERTOOL (1986) and the rare 1990 feature RYAN IDOL PERSONAL VIEW, which costars Steve Hammond in a nonsex role, and features Mr. Idol stripping and wanking solo several times. He also wrote the movie! I don’t think it’s even available on DVD. Each screening will be preceded by a presentation examining each star’s life and career. New Release Desk: “My Brother’s Hot Friend”

Here’s a peek at Trevor Knight with puppydog Kurt Wild in MY BROTHER’S HOT FRIEND, VOL. 1 from Pure Play Media, NaughtyAmerica.com‘s gay line Suite 703 and MyBrothersHotFriend.com (all of this co-branding is giving me a tension headache). Five years is equal to about ten or so straight years, right?
