Gay Porn and the Women Who Love It

The terrif Tristan Taormino has a new column online at VillageVoice titled “Girls Love Gay Male Porn” and subtitled “Brokeback Mountain was just the beginning…” (click here to read it). This subject bubbles up in the pop culture zeitgeist periodically, and from a purely anecdotal point of view, these days there is far less clutching of the pearls at cocktail parties when I bring this up. We receive a fair amount of mail from female fans (both straight and of the lesbianic persuasion) who adore gay porn fuck flicks. “I know lesbians who dig it more than any other kind of hardcore fare. I briefly dated a genderqueer dyke who just loved gay male porn,” Ms. Taormino writes. “She ran out and got the newest title from her favorite company the day it came out. In this case, she adored movies from Bel Ami, which feature young, hairless European lads (think the boy-on-boy version of the straight barely-legal genre). The boys are very pretty and androgynous, and some of them could definitely be mistaken for dykes with their clothes on. Ms. Taormino acknowledges the dearth of authentic lesbian porn, meaning porn “produced by and for lesbians.” Romaine Patterson often moans about this puzzling reality when I guest on “The Derek & Romaine Show”.

As well, “plenty of lesbians identify with various forms of masculinity: Their own gender expression may be at the masculine end of the spectrum, or they may like to fantasize and play with gender and sex. Gay porn gives them a range of masculine desires to relate to or lust after.”

The bottom line for many women is simply this: They “like to look at hot naked men fucking, and it doesn’t really matter that they’re fucking each other. I think it may also be true that while pornos full of romance and mood lighting are marketed to women, some prefer a sweaty, get-right-down-to-it romp in the locker room any day.” I’d agree with this; many straight women and lesbians have told me they are turned off by soft-focus hoity-toity nonsense.

Ms. Taormino also brings up an interesting point: Some women harbor an unease with heterosexual porn that does not surface when they watch gay adult flicks. Somehow, she writes, “our concerns and feminist politics don’t overshadow the sex when women are absent (as if a man could not degrade or coerce another man, which is obviously flawed logic).”

    Interesting facts stated, women do like gay porn. I have lots of gay friend & family and watching gay porn is just as beautiful (actually better) than straight porn, which is so insensitive and rude to most female stars. I have more gay dvds than I own hetero ans I’m straight 100% female. This proves people like sex regardless of “normal character roles”. The problem is when people over anaylize each other. Be proud of who we all are.

    Will- Glad you’re from the Bay Area. S.F. Still the best Gay community in the world! I hope there will be a great turn out and plenty of boths with possible porn stars to photograph. I think L.A has their Pride fest around the same time in June so California will be rockin this years especially since Gay marriage vote passed.
