Bobby Blake’s “Life” Now an Open Book

[Edits 06/22/08.] In Print: Back in April we wrote (click here) about retired performer (and now an ordained minister) Bobby Blake‘s memoir, My Life in Porn: The Bobby Blake Story (written with John R. Gordon) from Running Press Books. This precedes a Blue Blake memoir and John Holmes biography, both due in August. Anyway, Bobby Blake’s book is now available. An Amazon.com blurb attributed to Unzipped magazine raves Mr. Blake’s memoir is “an absolutely blistering account of his life as adult√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s number one gay, black star. No one√¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s feelings are spared here. This compelling tale is exactly what we love and expect from Blake: sexy, proud, in-your-face, and√¢‚Ǩ‚Äùultimately√¢‚Ǩ‚Äùhumanity-affirming.” There is only one photo√¢‚Ǩ‚Äùon the title page√¢‚Ǩ‚Äùand no index, so his costars and former coworkers can’t look themselves up (you know that’s what everyone does each time a memoir arrives on the scene). My comp copy just arrived, so hang tight for a review next week sometime.

There’s another porn star with a book coming out. Sebastian Rio. It’s in its early stages though.
John Holmes autobiography? The porn star has been dead for 20 years this year, so I’m sure you mean “biography”.
I said it before ..and i’ll say it again..this is coming from an African American..he has to be one of the most un-attractive men i’ve seen in porn!

It’s actually co-written by John R. Gordon which, based on my conversations with BB, was probably a good idea. The first half of the book is not devoted to “his life in porn” at all but rather his life prior to it. He’s a very strong personality and he shares – in no uncertain terms – the pervasive racism he encountered. And that’s why I was so glad you made an honest effort to discuss the Asian issue in porn. (Although I’m not sure, as I discussed on my blog a few days ago, that a lack of Asians in porn necessarily equates to racism.) I’ll be interviewing him this Thursday and hope you’ll draw attention to this. He’s a very bright guy – and VERY blunt – and it should be interesting to hear his views.
