Over the past day or two, the gay blogosphere has erupted with the news that Manhunt.net co-founder Jonathan Crutchley made a personal donation to the presidential campaign of presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain. His donation of $2300, first cited on The Huffington Post (CLICK HERE), is the maximum allowable amount and was accepted by the McCain campaign. Manhunt was founded in Boston in April 2001 by Mr. Crutchley and partner Larry Basile. This controversy comes on the heels of a recent, highly critical Out magazine titled “Has Manhunt Destroyed Gay Culture?” by Michael Joseph Gross, who cited Mr. Crutchley as a “liberal Republican.” The article also describes a $2.4 million monthly gross by the gay social networking website, and almost $30 million annually, not counting ad revenue. “Log in, get off, get betrayed,” wrote blogger Joe.My.God. (CLICK HERE). “It appears John McCain has accepted the maximum individual campaign donation from the owner of America’s largest gay sex hookup website,” wrote blogger Andy Towle (CLICK HERE). He further cites a blog posting by Crutchley who wrote, “Welcome to the age of the internet, where everyone’s private life becomes public. Yes, my contribution to John McCain’s campaign was listed on the Huffington Post. I believe McCain will be a better commander-in-chief than Obama, who also opposes gay marriage. If we have an experienced, seasoned person defending the country in this dangerous age, we will be able to argue about the gay agenda later. Yes, I am a Massachusetts Republican, which is about the same as being an Alabama Democrat. But don’t call me a ‘liberal.’ That’s an insult.” [Image ¬© Out magazine.]

Why am I not surprised by this at all? And McCain has not yet returned the donation?!

This story has really gotten around over the past couple of days and I’m glad. I only have about a dozen friends who use Manhunt (or that admit to having accounts) and most of them are canceling.

    Great exposé!

I know of two guys who have canceled their memberships (or aren’t renewing). Good. Hit them where it hurts most.

“. . .we will be able to argue about the gay agenda later.”

Notice two things: “argue about” — what is there to argue about? — and “gay agenda” — code phrase of the religious right. Don’t worry, Mr. Crutchley, nobody will ever make the mistake of calling you a “liberal Republican” again.

    One Word – INSANITY

What gay person in their right mind would vote for McCain, especially a business owner who caters to gays?

We really need to make a stand here and make him realize that we don’t want our gay dollars going to that old republican.

Obama all the way baby! WE NEED CHANGE!

I am SOOOOOO glad that I can honestly say that I have never visited Manhunt. My instinct about staying away from such a site has definitely served me well. The owner has a right to put his money where he desires but I’m happy to report he’s never gotten any of mine!

I’ve read at various blogs that a lot of guys are going to be canceling their memberships, so let’s see if they follow through. If we could get a Coors boycott going for so long, we can demonstrate our disapproval loud and clear.

There’s an update to this story. McCain returned the donation, and the Boston Herald is reporting that Crutchley now supports Obama. Frankly, I think his sudden political conversion is a PR move.

Awww, did poor little Crutchley get his feelings hurt? Don’t worry, Jonathan, I still won’t insult you by calling you a liberal, I’ll just call you a F*****G HYPOCRITE.

That’s horrible, he is so stupid and nieve. Gay RepublicaNS really need to see the light. OBAMA said yesturday that he supports gay rights including if domestic partner’s need to be with there loved onin hospitalsause of an illness. John McCain said in a debate that he doas not support ANY GAYS RIGHTS! So as a gay man in a relationship, how can this guy supoort a candidate who would not support him if his partner is in th hosptal dieing of the aid virus. The Manhunt owner seriously needs a wak up call. I as well have cancell my membership at “Manhunt.net
