Man of the Year Pick Generates Debate, Controversy
November 22, 2008 | 21 Comments
Holy schnikes, did our gay-for-pay story about Reese Rideout kick off a firestorm. Scroll down just two stories to read the many comments attached to our post earlier this week, and join the debate. We’ve got a good, thoughtful, passionate discussion going about straight men and gay porn. Cheers to the new Unzipped blog for linking back to our story ‚Äî “Man of the Year Passions Erupt!” ‚Äî but the gay-for-pay debate is just one of three, count ‘em, concerns over Mr. Rideout’s Men magazine cover. According to Unzipped, “bookstore chains have taken issue with Reese’s Mad Max-esque codpiece” and therefore the company will be wrapping the cover “so as not to offend the timid.” Oy! Elsewhere, GayPornBlog.com actually waded into the gay-for-pay thing a day earlier than we did: “…readers of this blog know [we] are huge fans of his. But would it kill Men Magazine to pick an actual gay man?” And then there’s my pal Victor at MOC Blog who links back to our original story, and goes on to dissect the troubling lack of non-white choices presented for the Man of the Year honor: “…What I see as much sadder commentary about this whole debate is that it’s primarily a bunch of white guys arguing about another group of white guys… The fact of the matter is the dialog about the controversy is still being controlled by whites for whites and only two or so of the comments really addressed that. And that, to me, is the real controversy here.” Thoughts?

While Men Magazine picked a straight guy for the Man of the Year, elsewhere, People Magazine picked a closet cased gay guy for Sexiest Man Alive. So really, we’re even.
But Men magazine is meant to be for a gay audience featuring and highlighting those who have accomplished a lot to rightfully earn their success. Why can’t he try out for sexiest playgirl model of the year? I bet he wouldn’t have a chance. The fantasy of having a straight man is on lots of peoples minds, but when they enter our industry to earn more money because the straight biz doesn’t pay them enough, they are not being true to themselves for believing or portraying a gay man who either wont suck dick, kiss, or get fucked. Maybe they should feel comfortable enough and finally admit that they are gay and move on with it instead of living a lie just for money. What does that show other people? Either than to be dishonest and unloyal to themselves.
Its nothing just against him, I congratulate him for his victory but is this who we as gay men want to portray who we are? The last two winners have not been gay and by some miracle have both been with Randy Blue. Since this studio is a big contributor to the ads placed in this mag, does this make it a big influence as to how the contest was won?
a) He is GAY. He can say what he wants, if you fuck/get fucked by men, you are GAY. I know it, he knows it, the world knows it. He is just not man enough to own to it.
b)Funny how we, gay people, get mad at black people for supposedly not supporting our cause, yet we can’t get ourselves to vote for one of us in something as banal as this. That’s low our self esteem is as a community.
c)Frankly, he’s got a hot body and a great ass, but other than that he is NOT all that. There are way hotter guys(straight and gay) than he…and let’s face it, he is a little too queeny.
If he is straight and he is comfortable working in gay porn – more power to him and those like him.
I know we are talking about gayxxx here but the times we are living in are different than before.
I see beautiful straight guys in the gym [and elsewhere- but especially the gym] all the time.
They like being noticed, not bothered at all that another guy has “checked them out”-
Again I sense they like being noticed and have no problem that it is a guy looking at them.
These are good times- people getting along, IMO.
The cover model is hot but I am wondering what he is wearing on his crotch?
Being comfortable with fags drooling over your bod in the gym is not the same thing as sucking cock and taking dick after dick up the ass in porn films, and claiming complete heterosexuality. Reese in no way is straight, and those that buy into that fantasy are a special kind of delusional.
michael,
“fags drooling over your bod in the gym”
Do you call yourself a fag michael?
I don’t- “noticing” beauty is noticing beauty.
What is the point of being so bitter michael?
WHO CARES whether he is gay or straight. He is making porn movies!
Live and let live!
This is much bigger than him… Don’t make it personal.
Playgirl mags got more variety and eye candy.
So why can’t MEN mag. do the same? Do not MEN mag go to Folsom Street fair? Gay Cruises?
I’m sure there are some men the camera loves.
Oh, I forgot. What about Erik Rhodes? I just can’t wait for my “Magnum book” for X-mas.
TJ-
Careful what you say. LOL. Hugh Jackman could sue you for libel.
What do you call yourself V.J.? Straight?
If you suck cock, drool over MEN, and take it up the ass, you’re a FAG too.
That’s not bitterness, it’s the TRUTH.
michael
I call myself a gay man.
But to say you can tell [with certainty] someones sexual orientation from your side of the computer, well to me that takes a special kind of ignorance.
Forgot to mention- there are as many gorgeous gay guys as straight guys at the gym-
I guess you could call me an equal opportunity drooler michael.
When are you bitchy queens going to get it through your thick heads that the READERS of Men magazine voted Reese Rideout man of the year. Clearly you whining jerks are a small vocal minority over those who know a good thing. Shut the fuck up all you jealous fat queens and go find something productive to do for once.
Sorry V.J., but I have a fully functioning brain, and 20/20 vision, so when I see guys fucking and sucking each other on my computer screen, I don’t automatically think STRAIGHT.
Reality is always more interesting than the fantasy.
When are you bitchy queens going to get it through your thick heads that the READERS of Men magazine voted Reese Rideout man of the year.
When are you going to get it through your thick head that only a cover man can be voted man of the year OK. All but one of the cover models were straight. So MEN haven’t given voters much of choice on the sexuality of the winner, now have they?
btw you’re the text-book self-loathing gay man this magazine really manipulates, you sound like you have a lot of hate and issues with homosexuality.
Achmed (what a name) and anonymous on 11.25 are obviously the same person. They sound pathetic, it’s more than obvious straights don’t belong in gay porn and neither do gays belong in straight porn. B-movies is a different thing.
El cid, actually if you read Anonymous’ comment carefully, he is tearing down Achmed’s argument, and pretty successfuly IMO. The first paragraph is a quote from Achmed, and should have appeared in quotes to make it clear.

I like to have sex with guys who actually enjoy gay sex. There’s nothing appealing or interesting to me about someone who has sex with other guys just because that’s their job. I pity queens who are obsessed with the gay-for-pay fantasy, they need to get a life.
Al, how disrespectful can you be? First, you refer to gay men as “queens” and then you say that people should get a life just because they don’t think the same way you do? Tell me, what business is it of yours whether or not someone has a life? It has always annoyed me when people say that.
“Al, how disrespectful can you be?”
Sounds like a challenge, Al.
