Just like any other industry, the worldwide financial meltdown has hit GayPornLand, too. Have you noticed the ever-increasing number of website compilation DVDs being issued from even the Big Nine traditional-media companies? Expect more of ‘em in 2009 — lots more. Along those lines, check out a tough-love email recently circulated to the performers repped by FabScout Entertainment. CLICK HERE for the full story…

…There have been a lot of changes in the porn world this year. With the economy at its lowest since the Great Depression, and knowing that several studios and websites have completely shut down and closed, and some lowering their scene rates to embarrassingly low prices, and others that are only filming 50% of projected projects, we should feel fortunate. Many of the large studios have had their employees pay cut by up to 30% so we know they are feeling it as well… The good news is yes, there are many companies that are still filming; it’s just a little slower at the moment. The turnaround is coming…

(Slightly edited for grammatical clarity)

The letter goes on to exhort models to get their hands on better glamour pics for casting purposes, and for use by FabScout Live, which books talent into nightclubs for personal appearances — a circuit that has not apparently declined quite so dramatically as film work.

Oh, and on a related note: erotic idol Eric Hanson is no longer employed by FabScout. Last summer, when the announcement was made that the agency was absorbing David Forest Entertainment, we revealed (CLICK HERE and scroll down a touch) that Mr. Hanson was part of FabScout’s Florida team. Well, never mind. I’m told that arrangement lasted less than a month. Onward…

Hey JC – Just out of total curiosity – who exactly do you consider to be the BIG NINE? I can only guess 5 :)

Anon — My list of the “Big Nine” traditional-media companies is as follows. This doesn’t cover what I term “boutique” studios like Black Scorpion, Dark Alley, Lukas Kazan Prods. or Miami Studios, nor does it cover online companies like RandyBlue or SeanCody, NakedSword or Sureflix. Yes, this list is in dire need of a revamp.

Also, “Big” doesn’t necessarily infer the physically biggest company. It also encompasses the best known and the most visible brand, the company with a history behind it, and so forth. I think probably one or two are in danger of losing their standing if things continue as they have.

    Regards,
    JCA

Thanks JC – I left out Colt and Hot House (oops) and wasn’t even thinking of any Euro-based studios like Bel Ami and Bjorn. My American mind was thinking American studios. (we Americans, so egocentric! LOL)

  5. DeWayne on November 25, 2008 3:34 pm

Uh JC in actual sales and physical size wouldnt you say Eurocreme is ever bit as large as Bel Ami? I would bet they are larger.

In fact the only American company on the “Big Nine” list with a similar prolific output(as Eurocreme) is Raging Stallion. Eurocreme would certainly be at the top of the list with RS.

Sean Cody alone pulls in more cash per month than any of the “traditional DVD” studios I don’t really think we can continue to marginalize the size or impact of the online players.

For one I was told Sean Cody,Corbin and Randy Blue scene rates have kept the “Big Nine” from reducing theirs as drastically as they would like.

And I might add in a conversation with a former Corbin Fisher model early this year, a model told me on his first DVD shoot for a Big Nine they tried to get away paying him HALF of what he earned per scene at Corbin.

The model was told well your new.

Model replied “Not exactly when my scenes all over the net”

They then tried to let him know DVD’s are a tangible product that will HELP your career so you should be willing to take a pay cut to “help us out here” (i.e. the studio was doing him a favor)

The model balked and said “well while I am in town I think I’ll just do a Randy Blue instead!”

Yep Model got his Corbin scene rate!
    ;)

    DeWayne-

You beat me to the punch. Eurocreme should be among the Big Nine. They are far more larger an operation than Bel Ami.

Guys… NO FabScout is FAR from Closing its doors….. BUT I felt it was important for the MODELS to know whats going on.
With my phone ringing off the hook, and bill collectors at EVERYONES doors, I felt it important enough for the models to be told the reality of what its happening. I think when we tell them “we will get back to you”, and they hear nothing, it isnt fair, they need to hear the honesty.

Porn DVD’s are overpriced. Always have been. Maybe now they’ll be forced to put the consumer first, as they always should have been.

    Kristen Bjorn?

You must be completely out of touch JC!

JC, from the studios you listed which companies have issued website compilations?

  11. Will on November 25, 2008 6:00 pm

Robert, not to speak for JC but I know Hot House and Bel Ami have.

  12. DeWayne on November 25, 2008 6:01 pm

Nah JC just Luuvvs Kristen Bjorn he was on his brain while he typed out the list ;)

Howard Honesty in the PornBiz? What an Alien and Refreshing concept! ;)

Will the difference between the “Old Media DVD studios” and the successful Online Sites.

Guess who is more in tune with what the customers want to see? Who do you think works to keep paying customers Happy.

    DVD Studios?

Many of them refer to the customers as the “Jerkoffs”
When they think of them at all!

  13. JC Adams on November 25, 2008 6:09 pm

    Thanks for the comments, guys.

I’m not a Bjorn groupie. But c’mon, he and Chi Chi LaRue are the best known gay adult directors and the only two who are brand names. Every movie is a top-seller or renter. A no-brainer.

I do realize the “Big Nine” list needs a revamp. I suppose Eurocreme would be a good candidate for an addition, but the list traditionally has focused on DVD-only (or primarily) companies and for some reason I always think of Eurocreme as an internet company. I don’t know why.

I may make this discussion the subject of its own posting over the holiday weekend…

    JCA

Hey Bjorn is a major player and has some gorgeous latino studs and good filming quailty, he sometimes becomes repetitive and his men kiss as if they smell shit (at least in most cases), he should change that and become top notch again.

    JC,

Eurocreme is definitely not an internet only company. Their website makes that blatantly clear. Go to http://www.eurocreme.com and see!

Thanks to Howard for some honesty.

I do think it is time for the studios to lower DVD prices. What better way to show consumers that they understand the financial pinch than to give us a break on DVD prices. I’d buy more DVD’s if they were priced more reasonably at like $29.95 instead of $49.95 or $59.95.

Note to Studios: GIVE PORN FANS OUR OWN BLACK FRIDAY WITH GREAT SALES PRICES ON DVD’S!

    JC -

    You mentioned website compilations.

What is a website compilation and what studios have them?

  19. Miles on November 26, 2008 3:45 pm

Eurocream has to be one of the best european studios..surpassing Bel Ami and def alot of American studios..they give the customers what they want..even there bareback stuff has some of the hottest guys…these other companies should take a hint in the crap they are putting out..maybe then they would survive:-)

  20. JC Adams on December 3, 2008 11:56 am

Robert — I just noticed your question, apologies. For starters, Bel Ami’s JOHAN’S DIARY series (at least), the HOT HOUSE BACKROOM series, the FALCON STR8MEN series, Raging Stallion’s Bang Bang Boys series, the whole Naughty America/Suite 703 line. All are compilations of website material.

    Greetings and salutations!
The “Big Five”, impressive, I’m happy to be of service to ALL 9 of the “family of companies”. Interesting to note five (5) are the “spin off’s” of the original Falcon.

    Best Regards,

Robert and JC I must mention the BEST bargain in website compilation DVD’s

Chaosmen’s 5 DVD’s feture the gamut from a BB compilation to the Edge and Service series.

All are 19.95 each (a true bargain) and the Box set is $48.

Chaosmen is also the first company to offer the HD MPG-2 1920×1080 master on DVD disk.
The ULTIMATE compilation 2.99 a scene.

(disclaimer I do not work for Chaosmnen) ;)
Just a BIG fan of one of the BEST Gay Porn Websites.
