gaychicago-30thtGreat, more crappy news. It’s a sign of the times, I guess: Gay Chicago Magazine is in the hands of a new publisher who has decided he doesn’t want porn included anywhere in the pages of the publication. As of last Friday, all porn reviews — as well as “The Adams Report by JC Adams” — have been dropped, without warning. The most recent “Adams Report” was a memorial to Caleb Carter; I think he would find it hilarious that my column would get shitcanned before it could run. And I’m sorry I never got a chance to thank the many GCM readers who were among my most vocal and active readers. I was invited to join the GCM staff by the late Ralph Paul Gernhardt — a/k/a “Big Daddy Ferguson,” one of my industry mentors and a great friend — some 11 or 12 years ago. (“Time doth flit/Oh, shit” — Dorothy Parker.) They were one of the last remaining print outlets to offer thorough, detailed gay porn reviews. They continued to publish my syndicated column after Big Daddy passed on in 2006, and it’s been one of my longest-running gigs (the magazine was founded in 1977 and is Chicago’s oldest continually operating LGBT publication). About 16 months ago, November 2007, X-Factor magazine out of Arizona was summarily dumped (CLICK HERE for our story), but at least it was reborn online; and I was laid off last summer when Knight Publishing — publishers of XXX Showcase and the Adam Gay Video Directory — went belly-up overnight. It’s grim out there, kids. Anyway, cheers to Mark and Stacy at Gay Chicago Mag for their fortitude and friendship. They still own the Grabby Awards, by the way. That show will apparently continue. Onward…

So let me get this straight: A magazine that “doesn’t want porn included anywhere in the pages of the publication” is still the owner of the Grabby Awards. Makes perfect sense. I presume this means that all promotion of the Grabbys is now verboten in the magazine that runs the event. Good luck with that.

Will — From what I understand the Grabbys will now be an entirely separate entity from “GCM.”

Stacy Bridges and myself Mark Nagel are now the owners of the Grabbys. Gay Chicago Magazine has nothing to do with the show. The Grabby show will go on as planned May 23 at the Park West Theatre with 5 parties going on during Memorial Weekend in Chicago celebrating the best in gay porn! Hope to see you …grabbys.com

Maybe they can use the money they’re saving and hire a decent graphic artist. That cover is hideous.

Yikes, who bought GCM and who is the idiotic new publisher? So I suppose they’ll go glossy, go after ‘legit’ advertisers and then fold in another year or so when ‘WOW’ they realize ‘legit’ advertisers are dropping like flies regardless of the no-porn-zone tactic they’ve taken.

I’ve said before that the American gay male is his own worst enemy, and this is a prime example. Any gay man in this country knows that even if they don’t watch porn themselves, that porn is a much adored part of gay life. Why don’t these new publishers become right-wing ocnservatives? Because they’re doing the exact same thing as they do – publicly protest something that they probably adore to the point of obsession in private. Remember the saying, “doth prtoest too much”.

i have always been a fan and supporter of jc adams and gay chicago.
its a shame that the new leadership/ownership is getting rid of the adams report.
the first things i would read when i would pick up a gay chicago were the events section, then i would browse through all the pictures from club events and then read though the adams report.
i think its a shame that it will no longer be featured in the rag.
and congrats to stacy and mark.
you guys will do a fabulous job as usual
just dont work too hard boys.

Here in San Diego the Union Trib is dumping reporters left and right and has been on sale for a year.
