Alan I heard they laid everyone off last Summer and fall.(they were San Diego based) Naughty America is the parent company and they seemed to have pulled the plug. Exclusives Dempsey Stearns and Tommy Defendi have been working for other studios as well.

No affiliate updates were emailed after November.

Alan — Yeah, Suite 703 is pretty much kaput. I don’t think they’re officially closed, but last I heard they were going to cycle through their banked material and then go quiet. Unless something has changed very recently, they aren’t shooting new stuff.

Thanks for the quick replies DeWayne and JC – and yes, I’d pretty much assumed they were kaput. I guess I should have been clearer in my original post that I was more curious as to why they had stopped (understanding that the simple answer will be $ related ) and why no one seems to be talking/writing about it? Or are/have they, and I’ve just somehow missed it?

I mean given the industry hype surrounding the launch of Suite 703 and given the more recent ‘state of emergency’ stories about the biz that have been floating around ever since Larry Flynt went to DC looking for a bailout, you’d think Suite 703 would be offered up frequently as a prime example to fit whatever theory one has about what’s wrong with the gay porn industry these days…

So, was it a case of too much money being invested in ‘star’ names (in front and behind the cameras) and production values, or bad timing of Naughty America sinking a bunch of money into a new venture just before the economy crashed? Is it because they weren’t fetish-related like other new sites like Cocksure Men or Boundgods. Are they a casualty of the competition from tube or torrent sites? Is it because Randy, Corbin and Sean own too much of the same marketplace (though sites like Cockyboys and Collegedudes 247 seem to have done OK in much the same arena)? Or all of the above?

I’m just kind of surprised that this isn’t being talked/written about more as opposed to who’s saying what to whom on their blog (and that wasn’t aimed at you, JC, as I commented a while back on the Lucas/Corrigan clash I appreciate that you tend to limit the reporting you do of those kind of stories – a trend I wish others would follow…) So am I the only one who’s kind of wondering what’s the scoop here, or just the only one who cares?

Alan my personal opinion about Suite 703 as a
Pornsumer and not a blogger who was an affiliate (means I share in the booty LITERALLY if they succeed)

Suite 703 launched with 3 associated lines they should have started with one (each line required updates on a punishing schedule)

At their peak they delivered the content but it was erratic in quality.

Two of the best scenes of 2008 came from this studio

They had 2 great exclusives in Dempsey Stearns and Tommy Defendi unfortunately for every good scene they would follow up with a truly second rate cast in a mediocre effort.

To sum up credit Suite 703 for launching Phillip Aubrey (Jasper St Johns) Dempsey Stearns,and Jeremy Lange (soon to be in Brent Corrigans Big Easy) All A list performers!

Dewayne, I guess I classify Cocksure Men as ‘fetish’ because of the emphasis the site has on barebacking – without wanting to get into that whole can of worms, that’s more or less how I see barebacking (as a fetish) – if only because, like many fetishes, some people are really into it while others really hate it… What I’ve seen of Cocksure Men, I like and agree it’s been solid in it’s debut.

As for 703, agree that both the scenes DeWayne mentioned were hot, there were a few others (I recently lost the HD I had DL the scenes on, when I was a member) but I recall there was a shower scene with Riley Burke I really liked and a university dorm-themed 3-way with Kurt Wild that stood out to me too. Unfortunately, as Marc K. implies, there were a lot of scenes that didn’t stand out to me… but then that’s the way I tend to feel about Cockyboys too – some really hot scenes but mostly ‘kind of blah’…

As for Mortal Kombat, we’ll see how that goes…

As for GAYVNs, maybe T-Bird was talking about live streaming the ceremony…

At any rate, I tend to find the GAYVNs to be profoundly uninteresting because, in my opinion, it seems directed at, and designed to benefit, a few hundred (at most) industry players/preformers/promoters etc. while having as little to do with the people who make the whole shebang possible (i.e. the fans – you know the people who actually put down their hard-earned dollars to subscribe to websites, DL from AEBN, but/rent DVDs, etc.) So the ‘exclusiveness’ of the show to the ticket-holders is, in my view, just one symptom of a much larger pattern.

1) There are too many nominations/awards for them to mean much to me. With so many nominations in 40-50 categories, it seems that ‘everyone’ gets nominated for something, which kind of cheapens it as a guide to the year’s best porn.

2) The lack of transparency about the whole process is an even bigger issue for me. I have no idea who the judges are, how they’re chosen, and most importantly, what criterion they use for some of the categories (i.e. is best newcomer going to win because he filmed 30+ scenes in a year with 12 different companies or because he filmed 2 very hot scenes as an exclusive? Or, to be admittedly cynical is it because he’s got the most ‘friends’ on the judging panel? That last possibility is where the lack of an open transparent process really hurts the GAYVN ‘credibility’ in my book).

3) Unlike say the Cybersockets, there’s no way of having some fan input… goodness knows, I’m hardly advocating MORE categories but a “people’s choice’ category or two with some online voting might actually convey the opinion that the GAYVNs actually ‘care’ what the fans/consumers think…

In short, my reaction to the GAYVNs is pretty much a big yawn and I’m going to be far more influenced in choosing my porn by the blogs, review and other sites out there rather than the news that so-and-so was nominated/won an award from the GAYVNs…

But that’s just my 2 cents…

Just a notice for you – While down in Palm Springs in mid March the obits in the local paper THE DESERT SUN reported that actor Steve Pierce (aka Steven J. LaPeikis) had passed away on March 12th at the age of 44. No cause was given. He had made films for Falcon and other studios in the mid 90′s. He had just published his first work of science fiction WORLD WITHOUT WINTER in 2008 as well as marrying his partner of 20 years, Tom Miller.

Mike I am sad to hear this Steve was an amazing and talented man who also explored and displayed openly and unashamedly with the Fetish community.

Mike — Thanks for the tip regarding Steve Pierce’s obit. I’ll check it out. This is sad news; I spoke with him relatively recently about doing a story about his novel.

Alan the owner of AVN Magazine also owns video stores so it is most likely that the DVDs sent in to be reviewed for the awards end up on the shelves of his stores sooner than anyone actually watches them to vote for an award.

The GayVNs are an inside joke, Alan. There is no judging, only a couple of “editors” at the GayVN shack who basically decide who’s nominated, who attends, and who “wins” what award. Of course, the big condom-only studios are the only invitees, although this year they broached the bareback conundrum and were thoroughly rebuked. Chi Chi and Titan boycotted, despite everything they’ve said otherwise. (Who can believe that any event in Australia would take precendence over the biggest US gay porn event?) Comically, the barebackers unanimously told GayVN to go frack themselves. And then, on ~~Raging Stallion’s~~ AEBN’s big night, Michael Lucas stole the show. It’s debatable whether or not the GayVNs — let alone the GayVN section in the monthly AVN magazine — will even occur next year. I’m not holding my breath.

It’s not just that there are way too many categories, way, way too many nominees, and the winners are always predictable. The bottom line is that a GayVN award is meaningless, as no additional sales result, and frankly, no one remembers who won a month afterwards.

But the kicker is what really happens to all those DVDs that the nominees submit. A friend of mine submitted his movie three years ago, including sending the GayVN offices 25 copies of the DVD. Two or three weeks later, the surreptitiously marked copies showed up on eBay, Naughtybids, and months later one was even returned from a rental store as a defective. And despite the movie being worthy of recognition in the category, the award went to… another big name studio as more or less a consolation for not winning the big award.

In the end, the GayVNs cost more than they’re worth!

At first I thought it was ghoulish, but a thorough surfing of biz blogs in the gay web told me I’m not alone, and my interest in dead porn studs is, in fact, quite common in my demographic (40s up).
