freshmen_men_090809Unzipped Media has announced a reorganization of its venerable print properties. All-male adult magazines Men and Freshmen will cease monthly publication and transition to newsstand-based quarterly frequency, with a greater emphasis to be placed on their web presence. Men and Freshmen are iconic brands in the gay adult market; the latter was founded in 1991, and the former is celebrating its 25th anniversary year. “We’re pouring all of our resources into Unzipped magazine and our online premium brands. These properties have the most growth potential in our company,” Unzipped Media Group Publisher Dustin Tyner told me for XBIZ. “We’ll be increasing Unzipped magazine’s page count and retaining many of the most successful elements of Men and Freshmen in those pages. We’re also really focused on producing new media content for Unzipped.net,” said Executive Editor Rick Andreoli. “Our site traffic is growing tremendously so it made sense to continue the Men and Freshmen brands online and with the special editions.” The affiliated websites for both magazines are also set for a revamp. Great. Maybe now they’ll pour some resources into paying their staff.

“Quarterly” means “we have contracts we have to honor, so we’ll let the mags die a slow, painful, agonizing death first.”

I can’t see how “Unzipped” can stay viable as a print magazine. If they keep the nudity and porn, it can keep going. But management has said umpteen million times it wants to slowly move away from nudity. If they dump the nudity, though, “Unzipped” will end up looking just like “Out” — and in that case, Regent may as well shutter “Unzipped” to keep their bigger-name, cleaner-image magazine open. “Unzipped” could survive in Web-only format, if and only if it keeps the nudity. Otherwise, put the lipstick on the pig and kiss it goodbye.

Going Web-only is not a viable strategy, in my opinion. What, exactly, what do they think they are going to accomplish by keeping nudie Web sites up? It’s not like they will publish 1,000 photos of each model (like Badpuppy does). They aren’t going to make the leap into film production (which might help, if they do it smartly like Randy Blue). Releasing 25 or 50 images of 10 naked men each month just can’t compete with Corbin Fischer, Randy Blue, or Jake Cruise. Regent would be better off putting all their old content online (some of those photos are amazing, and haven’t seen the light of day in 20 years), then selling all three Web sites to the highest bidder (split them up, if need be) and then getting the fuck out of Dodge. “Advocate Men” and “Freshmen” simply don’t have the Web-cache to survive. And can you imagine the work and monetary investment needed to make them functioning, viable nude photo sites? God.

    My five cents.

I have been a long time magazine subscriber and lately have not been liking what I am seeing. I subscribed to Genre didn’t get it for a few months and decided to go on their website to see what issues I was missing only to find out that they had ceased publication due to the economy. Another fave Blender folded its monthly magazine through the mail and now has online subscriptions only (neither magazine had the decency to let their customers know through email or through the mail)
Recently Details another mag I liked folded as well into Maxim which I don’t care for. I got a note attached to a current copy of Maxim telling me that the magazine Details no longer is available and this is what is coming in its place.
Now I see this and it looks as if Freshmen and Men are going to cease to exist and Unzipped along the way ??
I know why some of these magazines are going by way of the net because that seems where everyone is these days including myself however I think this is a tremendous blow to those of us who enjoy getting these magazines through the mail monthly. I like seeing the men, couples etc pictured in centerfolds right there in my hand not via click on a link. Call my silly but I do.

I like Out and Advocate as well, enjoy the articles and stories but thats not my porn fix in ink that I have enjoyed over the years. I know there are other magazines I could turn to but those 3 were-are my favorites. If Unzipped media goes through with these cancellations and changes Unzipped like the above writer suggestedAkk articles, no porn, pics etc) I am through with Unzipped media all together.

Well, I guess that means the only thing I will need to hide when my mother comes to visit is my trailer trash escort boy toy.

Ya no doubt….when they look at my magazines they won’t see Zach Randall or Vince Ferelli anymore they will see the Rolling Stone.
