unzipped-sept-09Crime Blotter: Following the news this week that performer Damon Audigier has been arrested in connected with the murder of an 18-year-old Oklahoma man, we’ve been fielding requests from Constant Readers and others about the Gay Porn Crime Blotter ©. Some are speculating about a direct correlation between violent crime and porn performers and I’m not sure I can go there — most violent criminals aren’t porn actors, after all — and would instead suggest that our increasingly wired interwebbed world means that such tragic, sordid stories receive far more attention than ever before. (However, it’s probably worth exploring why so many all-male adult performers who commit crimes are gay-for-pay.) Here is a quick-links guide to Gay Porn Crime Blotter stories over the past several years. Follow the links for more background, as we are linking to the most recent posts. Oh, and there is an update to one story I haven’t yet written up: Harlow Cuadra and Joseph Kerekes, both convicted and serving life sentences for the murder of Cobra Video producer Bryan Kocis, will soon face a trial to determine the amount of damages they owe the Kocis estate; as well, Cuadra’s appeal is pending. As linked below, a true-crime book about the case (for which I was interviewed) is forthcoming.

    thanks for mentioning the gayforpay connection, I loathe the connection of gayporn and crime and the bad connotation gayporn gets from it all

    When I first heard the story about Damon Audigier, my first question was whether or not he was gay-for-pay. Mainly due to the fact that I had already explored the connection between violence and gay-for-pay actors a little over 2 YEARS AGO.

    Tre no doubt also invented the term “rough trade,” lo those many decades ago. Keep those deep insights coming, oh profound one.

    I didn’t realize there had been so many lately! And you’re leaving off a couple, too. I guess there was nothing new to report about them?

    To my knowledge, Vardanyan, Harlow, Joe, and possibly the twin (which ever one was convicted) are not g4p, but gay. What does that have to do with violent crime, anyway? Why the protest? My question remains open for discussion, and it is no indictment of gay porn models who are not violent criminals.

    However, it seems that there is a higher coincidence of men who work as gay porn models committing violent crimes than men who work as straight porn models, or men who work in numerous other industries. Of course, there are industries that have higher rates of coincidence, but that’s neither my area of interest nor the focus of this blog or even this article.

    @Jamie,

    I don’t know about the others you mentioned in your comment, but Vardanyan (a.k.a. Nickolay Petrov) claimed to be straight, and his arrest was the catalyst for me looking into that connection of gay4pay actors and violent crimes.

    @jesus_mary,

    I don’t ever take credit for something I haven’t done. So my making it a point that I realized that a connection between most violent crimes done by gay porn actors being by gay4pay actors is me taking credit for a connection few have openly addressed, and few have given me credit for being one of those who brought it to light.

    So I’m suspicious of the motivations for your catty reply, but it’s getting too off-topic so I won’t address here what I suspect is at play from your end.

    Tre, I had the same reaction. I follow Audigier so I was pretty sure he was gay, but I went back and double checked because I did assume he was gay for pay which says a lot about the industry. I love how some people in the industry feigned outrage, “How could this happen? Why do these boys go wrong?” Please! These people know exactly what these boys go wrong.

    Porn (ALL KINDS) has always brought in people who were emotionally fragile, mentally unstable, or lived life on the edge, that is nothing new. Is their a responsibility from the producers in the industry to weed out these guys? Look at the Jason Crystal blog posts that have popped up. A number of producers and talent have come forward with their own horror stories about him. At what point do you say “it’s not worth it”

    Ryan Rockford of Randy Blue was outed on thedirty.com and I sent the thread over to another blog. People from his hometown came out of the woodwork to say how mentally unstable he was and had issues with harassing and stalking. He wrote on there how he had to do some “disgusting shit” and talked about how awful it was. Then he used some homophobic slurs to top it off.

    The point? Do these porn producers who see an obviously unbalance person have some responsibility NOT to use these guys? I’m afraid we haven’t heard the last of the Marcus Allens and Pat Batemans. What if Rockford gaybashes someone who comes up to him and says he’s a fan? Or attacks a scene partner? Will Randy Blue have blood on his hands? No matter how cheap they work or their fan popularity, shouldn’t at some point these producers recognize that it’s not healthy or GASP ethical to use someone who shows some clear signs of being emotionally disturbed.

    Of course you can’t do background checks on your male talent, and all sides of the industry will always get people who are desperate and in a real bad place in their lives. Phil Bradley still has a hard time coming to grips with doing porn.

    I don’t know what the solution is JC, but at the same time since I have started participating on these forums, I have traded emails back and forth with some people in the industry and some of the things I have heard aren’t pretty.

    One performer told me he physically didn’t feel safe on the set working with a particular performer. At some point I think the director/producer has to step in and say this environment isn’t healthy for you (the performer) and just isn’t worth it.

    One of the things that surprised me about the Jason Crystal mess, was the lack of communication on the part of the production companies. Yes they are competition, but at the same time, I think it would have saved them a lot time, misery, and resources if they had communicated with each other.

    Perhaps some kind of network among talent managers, directors, producers, and even the talent themselves needs to be put together to warn or weed out these guys. Some of them weren’t trouble on the set, but some of them were.

    In the end, however, I think it all boils down to desperation whether its for a hit or survival. Tre Xavier you make some great points and I agree with you 100%
