Dept. of Self-Promotion: The April 2009 edition of iBelAmiNews, the official Bel Ami newsletter, has gone live. As our Constant Readers are aware, I spent most of my most recent trip to Bratislava and Prague composing and collecting the text for the newsletters. (And when I go back later this month, I’ll be working on the May and June newsletters.) While I was there, the webmaster began fielding odd emails from what appeared to be massively disgruntled Twilight fangirls laboring under the delusion that George Duroy had co-opted the “Bel Ami” name to make a quick buck from interest in the Robert Pattinson period film of the same name, which is now filming. Everyone kind of laughed it off at first, but the emails grew stranger and more deranged. Smelling a good story, I decided to interview Mr. Duroy about his brush with fangirl obsession, which is part of this month’s newsletter (it’s also going to be published elsewhere, stay tuned for updates). It’s worth noting that website traffic has spiked dramatically since news of R-Pattz — a nickname which, to Mr. Duroy, “sounds like mangled Magyar” — toplining a new version of Bel Ami was announced (it has been filmed a dozen times or more over the decades). “These emails were amusing at first, but now they are becoming a nuisance. I am not sorry to tell them Bel Ami, the porn studio, has existed for 17 years and was formed when Mr. Pattinson was likely still in diapers,” Mr. Duroy says. Pictured is Kieron Athey [left] with his brother, both of whom several years ago filmed auditions for Bel Ami without the other’s knowledge.
