Jake Shears Talks Sex Work with Rentboy

Press Release Roundup: Just a few hours after I wrote about the clever profile Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters fame posted to Rentboy to promote their forthcoming album (scroll down a tick or click the link below), the site has posted an interview with the singer/performer. “Rentboys and sex workers are people who operate outside the lines of our society. They make their living through sexuality and showing people a good time. In that way, we as a band feel that we’re all on the same team and that there should be no shame in using sex as self-employment,” he tells interviewer Sean Van Sant. “I just want to say that I have an incredible amount of respect for sex workers. I think it’s a fully valid profession that deserves to be treated as any other. European Dispatch: Prague and Bratislava

Good evening (local time) from Bratislava. The rain followed us (well, probably just me) from Prague all the way down the freeway to Slovakia last night. There are stretches where the land is flat and we could see the storm clouds, dark and dramatic, hover on the horizon, drenching some other part of Central Europe. The sun did make a brief appearance and produced a rainbow. There was a soul-deadening, 15-kilometer stretch of bumper-to-bumper traffic right out of Prague which added another two hours to our trip — 120 minutes to drive just 15 kilometers! — but being stuck in traffic with Luke Hamill and George Duroy is not a terrible thing. During my 36 or so hours in Prague, I wrote copy for several upcoming Bel Ami projects — including the back of the DVD insert for the forthcoming FLINGS 4 featuring Mr. Hamill and young buck Keanu Faria — and went out with some of the BAOL crew to a couple of gay clubs, where I got myself nicely hammered. Morning had dawned by the time we parted ways. More rain kicked in as I walked back to my hotel and soaked me to the bone; naturally, my card key did not work (fie upon the inventor of the hotel-room card key) and I had to ride the elevator back downstairs and drip all over their lobby, hitting the reception bell until the night clerk woke up and reactivated my card key. I return to Los Angeles a week from today and will have been gone for nine weeks. I’ve never been abroad for such an extended period; it’s long enough to feel homesick and yet entirely separate and, well, foreign. It ought to be an intriguing experience to shift away from the slower, more sedate rhythms of European life to the hullaballoo of Los Angeles.

AMA Votes to Support Mandatory Condom Usage in Porn

The American Medical Association [AMA] has decided to lend its considerable influence in support of legislation that would require the use of condoms in all porn production. A vote was taken during the group’s annual meeting in Chicago, XBIZ reports. “Mandatory condom use is a contentious issue here in L.A., the porn capital of the world,” writes Media Bistro. “Opponents of such measures (mainly the porn companies) argue that the current safety standards are effective, and that customers don’t want to see condoms in adult films. Meaning customers might start spending their money on foreign-made films instead.” However, XBIZ views the vote from a different perspective. “AMA delegates decided to support legislation that aims at improving the ability of local health departments and state regulators to investigate and control exposures to infectious diseases and existing OSHA standards be enforced to reduce infectious diseases in the industry,” their story notes. In related news, reps from the Free Speech Coalition will be in attendance with members of the industry at a Cal/OSHA advisory meeting June 29 which will address “bloodborne pathogen regulations for the adult industry,” an FSC rep notes. This and similar meetings “follow an ongoing campaign by AIDS Healthcare Foundation to pressure local and state agencies to enforce bloodborne pathogen regulations, including mandatory condom use, on adult production sets.” FSC Executive Director Diane Duke said the advocacy org is “working strategically on a number of fronts to make sure that stakeholders — adult industry producers, performers and set workers — are able to be heard above the noise of these anti-adult industry organizations and their political agendas.” Ms. Duke also notes they are developing a “petition voicing performer’s concerns over any mandatory condom regulation” as well as an “FSC Health & Safety Manual” for industryites.

Normally the revelation of a public dalliance between a Republican politician and a gay porn performer results in public scandal and disgrace — see exhibit: Castagna, Cody — but this week’s scoop by TheSword.com that Minnesota State Senator Paul Koering recently treated newcomer pupcake Brandon Wilde to steak dinner is different: Mr. Koering is openly queer (although a fair-weather friend to the gay community in legislative terms) and he isn’t denying that he went on a date with a porn actor, even though he has a primary election in August and, if he wins that battle, re-election in November. Further, he even gave a statement to The Sword. Now that’s a new wrinkle. The story snagged lots of gay-gossip blog coverage and, no, we’re not envious of what their page-hit count must have looked like yesterday, not at all. Mr. Wilde burbled to The Sword about Koering’s claims over dinner that he would work on gay-rights issues once he won re-election; the senator denies he said anything like that. They met at a recent gay pride picnic. Their date was chaste and a second outing is apparently planned. “I think he wanted to get in my pants, truthfully. And he was pretty flirty,” Mr. Wilde says. “But it was just dinner. We both were checking out the waiter though. Robert Van Damme Arrest Update

Crime Blotter: I’m sure most of our Constant Readers have heard by now that performer, director and label owner Robert Van Damme was arrested on Thursday, May 20 on domestic violence and contempt of court charges. The incident occurred when I was on my blogging break, so I am just catching up on the news and trying to verify all of the details. Per talent manager David Forest, who repped Mr. Van Damme earlier in his erotic career, the bodybuilder’s most recent court date was June 7 at the West Justice Center in Westminster, CA. He had been held at the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana, and court records show he received “in-custody release” on June 9. Mr. Van Damme, 40, is a native of the Czech Republic and his arrest could lead to deportation. Stay tuned for details. He first appeared on the scene back in 2003 or ’04 as a Blue Blake discovery and has anchored several dozen sexpics.
