'L.A. Zombie'-Francois-Sagat-chest-wistfulIt’s been a busy week and a half for writer-director Bruce LaBruce and the cast of L.A. Zombie, including erotic idol Francois Sagat as its undead protagonist. As we wrote last week (see the links below), the Melbourne International Film Festival canceled a screening of the film, resulting in an avalanche of publicity that went viral around the gay, gossip and media blogosphere and into mainstream media circles. The latest is an op-ed penned by Mr. LaBruce for The Advocate. “When I first heard the news about the banning… I have to admit my first reaction was ‘Eureka!’,” he writes, noting that Zombie was shot in a week on a budget of less than $100,000. “As a director who has often made extremely low-budget films, publicity is an essential part of the process.” He notes the ongoing effort in Australia to “monitor and control” access to pornography. “This kind of state control is an infringement on civil liberties and freedom of expression and should not be tolerated,” Mr. LaBruce said. He describes the new film as “difficult and provocative” and “made in the tradition of avante-garde and surrealist film in a strongly pornographic style. This alone will make it unpalatable for many viewers who are not used to watching nonnarrative, experimental film. It’s also a meditation on the homeless situation in L.A. engaging themes of necrophilia, sex magic and ritual.” Naturally, some viewers will be offended. “But it should be up to those who wish to see it to make up their own minds about it without censorship,” he said.
