I’ve been enjoying a new show on the Logo network called 1 Girl, 5 Gays. It’s an import from MTV Canada and runs at midnight. The premise involves a bubbly female host posing a series of questions, most of them relating to love and sex, to five gay guys of varying stripes. A few weeks ago I posted about an episode where the gays were asked to name a porn star; they came up with the heroically diverse trio of Buck Angel, Pierre Fitch and Matthew Rush (see the link below). Another recent episode had the guys debating whether porn actors should be required to wear condoms. One of the gays was dismissive (“To be honest, I don’t care what porn stars do”), an irritatingly condescending attitude another panelist called Ian displayed in a recent episode. Two of the guys didn’t feel porn should be setting an example for gay men when it comes to safer sex. “It’s what it is. There’s a huge market for what we call bareback porn,” said panelist Jonathan. “(I’m) not saying that I’m gonna condone that, but that’s what gets people off, so give the people what they want.” One of the gays and the host apparently think models don’t have a say in whether they can participate in safer sex techniques (“If a director told you to take a condom off, that’s fucked up,” says panelist David). Several don’t believe condoms should be required in porn, nor should they necessarily serve as safer-sex education films. “I think it’s a personal choice,” panelist Jean-Paul says. “How much responsibility does the art form have, versus how much personal responsibility do you have?” 1 Girl, 5 Gays has been on the air about 13 months, but I don’t know when this particular ep originally aired. I watched it online at AfterElton.com: CLICK HERE to view it. And CLICK HERE for their Twitter feed.
