C1R Offers VOD Giveaway to Facebook Fans

Bijou Theatre Celebrates 40 Years of Sexplay in Chicago

Time Out Chicago magazine has a brief, illuminating article (penned by Jason A. Heidemann) on the 40th anniversary this month of the Bijou theatre in Chicago. Owner and erotica pioneer Steven Toushin—a straight man, now 64, who was jailed twice on obscenity charges and was inducted into the GayVN Awards Hall of Fame a few years ago—summarizes the ebb and flow of business from the hedonistic 1970s through the ’80s-era AIDS crisis, the ’90s prior to the omnipresence of the internet, and into the ’00s, when live sex shows and venues such as the Bijou were mostly wiped out when its customer base migrated to the web. “Four or five years ago was when the theater business started changing,” Mr. Toushin recalls. “People were going to… VOD sites, free tube sites. When the recession came, I lost tourism and convention business. The party was now quieter.” And now, a couple of years into the new decade? “I’m still going,” he says. “I’m a throwback to when sexual attitude was not clean. It was erotic and fun, had a little bit of danger to it. The Bijou probably have a few more years of being quiet and then it will start picking up again… I’ve survived it all.” Mr. Toushin and the Bijou celebrate 40 years with a party called “Stayin’ Hard” this Saturday. I’ve written quite a bit lately about Milo and Elijah Peters, the identical-twin bodybuilders exclusive to Bel Ami.
