‘Smut Capital’ Earns NewFest Honors

Awesome news: The film Smut Capital of America yesterday won Best Short Documentary at NewFest, New York’s LGBT film festival. The honors were handed out last night at the Walter Reade Theater in Lincoln Center. Smut Capital was directed by my colleague and pal Mike Stabile with Ben Leon and Jack Shamama. It’s been making the festival rounds all spring and summer (see the links below). Its focus is on San Francisco’s infamous Tenderloin District in the late 1960s and ’70s just when the porn biz was just kicking to life. Manu Maltes Ends Hunger Strike; Meets Prime Minister

Retired skin star Manu Maltes has ended his hunger strike thanks to an appeal by his country’s prime minister. Earlier this week I wrote about the unusual story of Mr. Maltes, whose real name is Emanuel Cini. He is a resident of Cospicua, on the island of Malta, and staged the hunger strike in opposition to several of the country’s elected officials. Mr. Cini is struggling to recover from toxoplasmosis and felt the government’s inadequate response to the needs of the disabled in Malta was potentially life-threatening. His action was covered by local media, including a blogger who outed him as a porn performer. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi made a personal appeal to Mr. Cini to end the hunger strike and met with him at home this past Monday. “After a long discussion with him, Dr. Gonzi begged him to eat,” reports one local paper. “Dr. Gonzi had someone bring [two kiwis] and he peeled it for Mr. Cini, with whom he spoke for over two hours.” He personally apologized to Mr. Cini and promised to address his concerns, particularly in regards to public transportation. As Manu Maltes, he filmed nine or ten sexpics between 2005 and ’08 for Lucas Entertainment, Men at Play and Catalina Video, among other companies. He was half of a power-couple with Edu Boxer; it appears they are no longer together. Schedule Update: GayVNs on Showtime

Porn Awards: The last of ten scheduled airings of the 2010 GayVN Awards on Showtime and its various satellite channels was Wednesday night, but now it looks like the cable network has added one more broadcast (for now): Friday, September 30, at the perilous hour of 3:35 AM on Sho 2. Chicago’s Bijou Celebrating 40th Anniversary

The pioneering Bijou Theatre in Chicago has been celebrating its 40th anniversary and various media outlets have taken note. It’s gratifying to see proprietor and erotica pioneer Steven Toushin—a married straight man—receiving overdue recognition. Back in January, Time Out Chicago ran a nice profile (see the link below), and now we’ve got another one from Windy City Times. “In those [early] years it was drugs, sex, rock and roll, and more sex. Police raids, local obscenity arrests, federal obscenity arrests, more courts, lawyers and more trials. Then there was harassment from the building department, [and] a few bomb threats. I would have to say life was fairly interesting,” he recalls. They porn films every day, a mix of condoms-only current titles as well as precondom-era classics. And it’s still a place men gather to hook up with other men. The Bijou is a little slice of gay culture and history that has managed to survive into the 21st Century. “There is nothing in the world like the Bijou,” says Mr. Toushin. “It is what sex was in the 1970s and ’80s. The Bijou has never been pretty; it has always been deliciously nasty and I’ll keep it that way till I done, then I’ll turn off the lights and go home.” By the way, they’re looking at bringing in ’70s erotic icon Bruno as part of their anniversary celebration. They were supposed to host with Jason Adonis, but that didn’t work out. I interviewed both studs recently and they were both witty and open and very aware of how they want to craft a career in this nutty business. Dominic Ford Warming Up New Season of Sexplay Contest

FSC Rolls Out New Performer Testing Program

Press Release Roundup: Free Speech Coalition, the adult industry trade org, has announced four testing facilities that are participating in its recently launched Adult Production Health & Safety Services (APHSS) program (see the link below for background). “The program has been developed with the help of legal and medical experts, as well as industry members,” said FSC Membership Director Joanne Cachapero.”It will be administered by the FSC as a resource to fill the gap left by the closure of the AIM clinic.” The clinics are open to the public; however, adult industry performers that test at the facilities will have their “work availability results” entered into the APHSS medical database that can be accessed by producers. “FSC has been working diligently since the closure of AIM to continue health and safety protocols for adult production,” said Ms. Cachapero. “Our top priority has been to protect the well-being and privacy of performers, as well as securing the best possible testing services for the industry.” CLICK HERE for the new APHSS testing locations…
