* Michael Weinstein, President of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), recently made waves—again, in the media, where the nonprofit spends much of its time these days—by announcing that it would file workplace safety complaints with Cal/OSHA against Treasure Island Media. “Treasure Island has been quite vocal and outspoken in its opposition to condom use in the company’s films,” said Mr. Weinstein. “This is why we are filing workplace health and safety complaints with Cal/OSHA: to press for the enforcement of existing state and local workplace regulatory guidelines which would require the use of condoms in their—and all—adult films produced in California.” They specifically singled out 11 condomless titles as the basis for their concern; notably, several of those sexpics were not actually produced in the state. [Herald Online]
* Treasure Island’s founder, Paul Morris, responded on his blog. “The most consistently dangerous occupations in California–each having significant numbers of annual fatalities–are fishing, logging, farming, mining, construction, garbage collection, trucking, warehouse work and police work,” he writes. “Porn isn’t even on the list. If you added up all the fuck-ups and errors and slippages and rug-burns in all the porn made all around the world, it still wouldn’t make the list of dangerous jobs… But [Cal/OSHA], their staff and legal teams are watching porn. In a time of shrinking public funds, a time when public officials and employees really shouldn’t be rewarded for wasting time, wasting their training and wasting the taxpayer’s bucks… [Cal/OSHA] watches porn.” [The Island blog]
* In a statement to XBIZ, Mr. Morris described Treasure Island Media as “not just a company that is being attacked but instead a culture, a culture that believes that sex of [HIV-positive] men should be open, celebrated and embraced… The efforts of AHF are to hold onto the AIDS crisis and maintain fear and terror in order to maximize their monetization.” [XBIZ]

Do Michael Weinstein & AHF honestly think the eradication of bareback porn will have any impact on the rate of HIV transmission? Are they really under the impression that bareback porn is the reason so many gay men follow natural human instinct to have sex without artificial barriers? All critical thinkers know most gay men, just like men in general, have sex without condoms. Anyone who clutches their pearls in terror and amazement at basic human behavior (such as bareback sex) has no understanding of basic human behavior whatsoever. You could shut down every single bareback studio in the world and it would not offset millions of years of human evolution.

Of course there is no million of years of evolution encouraging barebacking. In pre-HIV San Fransisco, anal sex was not the most desired form of sex among gay men, nor was it the most commonly practiced (HOMOSEXUALITIES, Bell & Weinberg). It was not the sex act favored by the classic Greeks (GREEK HOMOSEXUALITY, Dover), nor the sex act of other martial cultures such as the Azande
    “Black Ganymede”, me).

The idealization of anal sex as THE gay sex act has come about after HIV. I think it is the result of people confusing the goal of achieving legal equality with that of being as much like straight people as possible. Anal sex is as much like straight sex as anatomy will allow. Internalized homophobia results in the thought that straight people must know the right way to do things. Bareback porn in obviously modern settings and new releases is culpable for reinforcing these inappropriate judgments as well as for endangering its models.

Nonetheless, intrusion of the law in our industry has seldom been benign, and is unlikely to be effective as the big studios with fixed assets and fixed locations are clearly losing market to anyone with a dick and a webcam.

The right thing is to wrap it, and to expose the nonsense and (internal) homophobia that drives barebacking, not to put a cop on every set.

(Oh, yeah. The most desired act in pre-HIV San Fransisco was oral, and the most commonly practiced was mutual masturbation. The act of martial cultures including classical Greece was between the thighs.)

It’s hard to take your reply seriously. As long as humans have been around there has been bareback anal sex. There are cave drawings of men butt-fucking, religious writings that refer to sodomy between men, documented practices of ancient cultures that turned pretty boys into sexual eunuchs, hell, even Aristotle discussed man-on-man butt sex, so it’s useless to bring up “pre-HIV San Francisco” thinking you’re backing up your position. I reject your notion that “The idealization of anal sex as THE gay sex act has come about after HIV”… that’s pure crap based on opinion. HIV is less than 40 years old, are you honestly claiming that gay butt sex has only been widespread for four decades? So why has it been a topic of contention throughout history???

I completely dismissed you after you said those who engage in gay butt sex are adopting the sexual habits of heterosexuals due to internalized oppression. Gay butt sex is based on physical pleasure, not self-hate. You referring to anal penetration as “inappropriate judgments” actually demonstrates your own difficulty accepting homosexuality.

I take issue with term “homophobia” because fear has nothing to do with the topic. Anti-gay is more appropriate. It’s not reasonable to say a gay person has internal fear of gay people based on butt sex and most people who say stupid things about gays are not afraid, they are ignorant.

Why should we wrap it up on bareback sets? Not one model has died as a result of bareback sex had during a video shoot. There is no epidemic of bareback performers getting or passing around infections. That’s all in condom porn. The CDC says: Different factors can increase or decrease transmission risk. For example, taking antiretroviral therapy (i.e., medicines for HIV infection) can reduce the risk of an HIV-infected person transmitting the infection to another by as much as 96%1. Consistent use of condoms reduces the risk of getting or transmitting HIV by about 80%2. Conversely, having a sexually transmitted infection or a high level of HIV virus in the blood (which happens in early and late-stage infection) may increase transmission risk.”…. So condoms use still wouldn’t prevent transmission 20% of the time. Should we ban all gay butt sex since it’s never truly safe?

How would you know what the sexual habits were in pre-HIV San Francisco and why would that be applicable to gays all over the world throughout history? Gay people existed throughout the world before San Francisco came to be. Where ever you got your “stats” from, I’m sure it wasn’t from a scientific survey or an epidemiologist, I’m sure it’s based on opinion and informal interviews. Pre-HIV San Francisco focuses on a particular subset of gay white men and it assumes their actions & habits were universally shared by gay men everywhere. The world of gays is much more diverse.

Why would a self-hating gay like yourself even be on a porn blog site since you seem to think butt sex is bastardizing the gay lifestyle?
